Still, education leaders say the latest data is both a reason to celebrate and a reminder that significant challenges remain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">On Houston Life, Thomas Pich, Director of District Partnerships for <a rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/goodreasonhouston.org\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/goodreasonhouston.org\">Good Reason Houston, <\/a>and Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar discussed what the new scores reveal and why they\u2019re focused on turning academic gains into long-term success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThere is a lot to celebrate right now in the Houston region,\u201d Pich said, pointing to record-high performance in Algebra I and English I, along with continued improvement among elementary and middle school students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Dr. Cuellar credits much of that success to an increased focus on early literacy and high expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhen you raise the bar higher, kids will absolutely reach it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve invested heavily in making sure students are reading at or above grade level, especially in the early grades, and now we\u2019re seeing those efforts pay off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.springisd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.springisd.org\/\">Spring ISD<\/a> has been one of the region\u2019s top-performing districts for year-over-year academic growth. Dr. Cuellar said the district has expanded resources for families by making curriculum available online, offering Saturday school, and creating family learning hubs that give students extra academic support outside the traditional school week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While the latest scores are encouraging, both leaders stressed that progress and urgency can exist at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">One statistic in particular highlights why continued improvement is so important. According to research from Good Reason Houston, only one in five Houston students currently goes on to earn a living wage as an adult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThis data is a really good push in that direction, but four out of five students are still not earning a living wage. There\u2019s a ton of work left to do.\u201d Pich said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Education leaders say stronger reading and math skills help prepare students for college, career training, and high-paying jobs, making academic success an investment in Houston\u2019s future workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The latest STAAR results also mark another important milestone.
