NEW YORK- New Yorkers experiencing homelessness could soon have access to hundreds of additional supportive housing units as the state makes nearly $46 million available to expand housing and services for some of its most vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n
Governor Kathy Hochul announced this week that $45.9 million is being released through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI), a program that helps people not only find stable housing but also receive services that can help them rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n
The funding will support adults experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic, and gender-based violence, veterans, chronically homeless families, and individuals living with mental illness or substance use disorders.\u00a0 It also serves older adults with disabilities, young adults leaving foster care or incarceration, people reentering their communities after prison, and individuals living with HIV\/AIDS or developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor those experiencing homelessness, supportive services and a stable home can be life-changing,\u201d Hochul said.\u00a0 \u201cThe Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative continues to help individuals connect with support and recover from challenges in a safe environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
The state\u2019s 2027 budget continues a significant funding increase approved last year, allowing projects to receive up to $34,000 per housing unit annually in the New York City metropolitan area and up to $31,000 in the rest of the state.<\/p>\n
Since the initiative launched in 2016, New York has committed funding for more than 11,600 permanent supportive housing units.\u00a0 State officials say research shows supportive housing helps reduce reliance on emergency shelters, hospitals and correctional facilities while improving employment, school attendance, and overall health.<\/p>\n
