An Argentine soccer player for a Venezuelan second division team has lost his wife and two children after last week\u2019s earthquakes, the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century.<\/p>\n
Lucas Trejo, who plays for Club Sport Mar\u00edtimo La Guaira, had spent much of the last three days combing through rubble and looking for signs of his wife Yanina and their children Aar\u00f3n and Ainhoa.<\/p>\n
Trejo\u2019s brother-in-law Ricardo Ardiles told CNN Espa\u00f1ol<\/a> Friday the soccer player was \u201cemotionally overwhelmed\u201d and that \u201cabsolutely nothing\u201d was left of the family\u2019s beachfront home in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas.<\/p>\n More than 1,400 people died and thousands more are missing in Venezuela, authorities said Sunday.<\/p>\n Trejo, 38, was at a team training camp in Caracas when the two earthquakes struck, CNN Espa\u00f1ol reported. He immediately rushed to his home in La Guaira, 18 miles north of the capital.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat he found was a horrific scene, Ardiles said. \u201cHe found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been. Our hope is that they weren\u2019t in there.\u201d<\/p>\n unknown content item<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n Trejo sifted through debris and looked for clues in the area, appealing for help that required heavy machinery, according to CNN Espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n Friends and teammates had also made a video pleading for more machinery.<\/p>\n \u201cRight now we only have one machine, but it\u2019s not enough,\u201d said Robert Garc\u00e9s, who plays for Venezuela\u2019s Metropolitanos F.C.<\/p>\n The search, however, came to a heartbreaking end.<\/p>\n On Sunday, Club Sport Mar\u00edtimo La Guaira said it \u201cdeeply mourns the irreparable loss\u201d of Trejo\u2019s family in a social media post, sharing a photo of the four together \u2013\u2013 Trejo with one hand resting on his daughter\u2019s shoulder and the other around his wife.<\/p>\n \u201cLucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n The disaster last week, which the US Geological Survey said was a rare \u201cdoublet,\u201d<\/a> with two major earthquakes striking just 39 seconds apart, has also killed and impacted several soccer players in the country.<\/p>\n Yimvert Berroteran, a promising young talent, was among the hundreds of people who died, the Venezuelan national team and the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) said Friday.<\/p>\n The 18-year-old played at the U-17 World Cup in Doha a few months ago and recently for the U-20 national team.<\/p>\n The quake also claimed the lives of young players V\u00edctor Palacios and Razan Sijaa, according to FVF and their respective clubs.<\/p>\n The partner of another player, H\u00e9ctor Bello, died while protecting their toddler, Bello said Saturday on social media.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll make sure to remind our baby girl how wonderful you were and how much you loved her,\u201d Bello wrote in a post<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tourists and foreign residents are also among the dead, including eight Chinese nationals, Chinese state media said Sunday.<\/p>\n Spain\u2019s foreign ministry said at least nine Spanish nationals have died and over 100 are missing.<\/p>\n The search has now surpassed the first 72 hours \u2013\u2013 the most critical window for finding survivors.<\/p>\n Historically, after that period, the chances of survival without a water source diminish rapidly.
