But is it really better or healthier than other sweeteners?<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8dc396\" class=\"body-graf\">Coca-Cola has announced it will start offering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/food\/news\/coca-cola-cane-sugar-launch-rcna220224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">version of Coke in the U.S. sweetened with cane sugar<\/a> instead of high-fructose corn syrup this fall.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-def09f\" class=\"body-graf\">The new addition \u201cis designed to complement the company\u2019s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1dbb65\" class=\"body-graf\">Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called high-fructose corn syrup \u201cpoison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d13ef6\" class=\"body-graf\">But there are no health benefits for substituting cane sugar for high-fructose corn syrup, experts say.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-131190\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSugar is sugar is sugar, whether it comes from cane sugar or high-fructose corn syrup or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/is-honey-good-for-you-rcna132143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">honey<\/a>,\u201d Angel Planells, a registered dietitian in Seattle and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, tells TODAY.com.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-838636\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cOur body processes them similarly. Overconsumption of any form can increase the risk of weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease or even dental problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4e4a72\" class=\"body-graf\">People should limit their intake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/natural-artificial-added-sugars-what-s-difference-t195002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">added sugar<\/a> in general, no matter what form, says Marie-Pierre St-Onge, Ph.D., professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University Institute of Human Nutrition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d7e4fb\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cTo me, making that change from high-fructose corn syrup to sugar cane, it&#8217;s just changing a sugar for a sugar. I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s going to have a major impact on public health,\u201d St-Onge tells TODAY.com.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Is Cane Sugar Different From High Fructose Corn Syrup?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-105790\" class=\"body-graf\">Cane sugar is made from sugar cane juice that\u2019s concentrated and crystalized, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsro.org\/about-sugar\/farm-table\/processing-and-refining-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Sugar Research Organisation<\/a>. With more refining, cane sugar becomes granulated white sugar.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2383ed\" class=\"body-graf\">It\u2019s also known as sucrose, a molecule made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ebbbaf\" class=\"body-graf\">High-fructose corn syrup is a liquid sweetener made from corn starch that\u2019s turned into corn syrup and processed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-39a39c\" class=\"body-graf\">It\u2019s also made up of glucose and fructose, but the version used to sweeten soft drinks contains 55% fructose, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-additives-petitions\/high-fructose-corn-syrup-questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes<\/a>, so \u201cthe proportions are a little more skewed towards fructose\u201d than in cane sugar, St-Onge says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-27b193\" class=\"body-graf\">Soda companies switched to high-fructose corn syrup because it\u2019s more economical than cane sugar, Planells explains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is Cane Sugar or High-Fructose Corn Syrup Worse for Health?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0f729e\" class=\"body-graf\">Both are added sugars that provide the same number of calories and raise blood glucose levels, St-Onge says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fdcc14\" class=\"body-graf\">She urges people to stop drinking sugary sodas in general since they&#8217;re empty calories. There are 39 grams of sugar in a 12-ounce can of Coca\u2011Cola, more than the American Heart Association&#8217;s recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sugar\/added-sugars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">daily limits for added sugar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-63b5fe\" class=\"body-graf\">But if a person is going to drink a cola anyways, choosing a product sweetened with cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup is not a wiser choice, she adds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3d3e2c\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAll added sugars, whether cane sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, can have negative effects on health such as weight gain,\u201d says Dr. Marc Eisenberg, a clinical cardiologist at Columbia University Medical Center and co-author of \u201cAm I Dying?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eba663\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;(This) in turn can cause increase in one\u2019s blood pressure, as well as diabetes and therefore heart disease and stroke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e6773c\" class=\"body-graf\">High-fructose corn syrup has a little extra fructose, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/how-high-fructose-intake-may-trigger-fatty-liver-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">linked with fatty liver disease<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2405457722005265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increased triglyceride levels<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0002916523059968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">insulin resistance<\/a>, Planells says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9dab3e\" class=\"body-graf\">A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2022.1013310\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">review of studies<\/a> found consumption of high-fructose corn syrup was linked with a higher level of inflammation compared to sucrose.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-987ab6\" class=\"body-graf\">But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-additives-petitions\/high-fructose-corn-syrup-questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> it\u2019s \u201cnot aware of any evidence\u201d that there\u2019s a difference in safety between foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup and those containing similar amounts of sucrose, honey or other traditional sweeteners.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5dc6f4\" class=\"body-graf\">The American Medical Association <a href=\"https:\/\/policysearch.ama-assn.org\/policyfinder\/detail\/H-150.919?uri=%2FAMADoc%2FHOD.xml-H-150.919.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> there\u2019s \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d to restrict use of high-fructose corn syrup in food or to require warning labels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can You Taste the Difference Between Sugar and High-Fructose Corn Syrup?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-728d4e\" class=\"body-graf\">While Coke sold in the U.S. is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, some social media users have been raving about the taste of the cane sugar version of Coca-Cola sold in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0b3b73\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is 10,000 times better,\u201d one woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thepasinis\/video\/7033522756398402862?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exclaimed on TikTok<\/a> after trying Mexican Coke.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ea9b3b\" class=\"body-graf\">Planells says he can also taste the difference, calling the cane sugar version &#8220;more refreshing,&#8221; though he wonders whether the glass bottle that Mexican Coke comes in affects the taste perception.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-96cc02\" class=\"body-graf\">When NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz and NBC News medical contributor Dr. Akshay Syal did a blind taste test comparing Mexican Coke with U.S. Coca-Cola sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, they had a hard time telling them apart.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5e1515\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI really can\u2019t tell,\u201d Schwartz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/now\/video\/coke-taste-test-gadi-schwartz-tries-both-versions-amid-trump-change-demand-243675205524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said on NBC News Now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a83b29\" class=\"body-graf\">Whether it\u2019s cane sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, it\u2019s still going to affect a person&#8217;s weight and risk of diabetes, Syal said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-68111c\" class=\"body-graf\">He tells people the easiest way to cut calories from one&#8217;s diet is to stop drinking sugar.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c44e7e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to hit your body really fast \u2014 your blood sugar levels are going to rise really quickly because there\u2019s nothing to buffer that sugar,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is the Healthiest Sweetener?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dca5df\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/fruits-with-high-sugar-rcna189181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sugar in fruit<\/a> comes with many other nutrients, like fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant compounds, says registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo, nutrition editor for TODAY.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-31f06c\" class=\"body-graf\">Using fruit or 100% fruit juice to sweeten foods or drinks is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/healthiest-sweeteners-rcna162360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">healthy sweetener<\/a>, she notes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c809aa\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Otherwise, all added sugar is very similar, Rizzo adds.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cane sugar is getting high praise over high-fructose corn syrup from some consumers.
