{"id":901537,"date":"2026-06-29T20:27:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/901537\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T20:27:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:27:32","slug":"family-homeless-shelter-opens-in-st-augustine-to-help-keep-loved-ones-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/901537\/","title":{"rendered":"Family homeless shelter opens in St. Augustine to help keep loved ones together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"fb41d3ea-65be-43be-95ef-205ca2883bc4\">Help for people experiencing homelessness have expanded in Northeast Florida with the opening of the Goff Family Shelter in St. Augustine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"46307324-62ae-4ffd-90dd-766cf0e5e170\">Operated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/stasociety.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Augustine Society<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that runs other shelters in the area, the Goff Family Shelter is designed to accommodate entire families needing a place to stay without separating children and adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"07b42292-5fb4-4af0-8362-8c816af8829e\">When people lose their housing, separating families can have a detrimental effect on children\u2019s mental and physical well-being, says Executive Director Judith Dembowski.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"805b0f95-adce-43eb-81d6-ec4fe96f5b14\">\u201cImagine being like 7 or 8, losing everything and then having to go somewhere where your mom is not,\u201d Dembowski says. \u201cThis keeps families together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c01f6769-dd47-455a-88ba-ba90349000d1\">The new shelter is in <a href=\"https:\/\/accordfreedomtrail.org\/64wash.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the former headquarters of the Florida Southern Christian Leadership Conference<\/a> on Washington Street in St. Augustine\u2019s Lincolnville neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"0c0a7bbf-dbf9-4d4c-84a6-15bfc1b45470\">Even though the shelter is just opening its doors, shelter staff have already selected the first set of families who will occupy the 37 beds.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"2d5f11ce-8f7d-4bae-8dee-48576c36ba93\">Dembowski says occupants are selected based on vulnerability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"39696a82-982b-4766-9f34-5efaf0dfff76\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to take families who are in cars and camps before we\u2019re going to take families who are doubled up,\u201d she says. \u201cWe fill it up with the most vulnerable, and then we fill it up to the top. And then as people roll out, we just keep filling it up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The need for the new shelter<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"f86aea72-0962-4453-9d20-17f1ef2f4dc2\">St. Johns County includes some of the wealthiest ZIP codes in Florida, but that does not mean the area is without people experiencing homelessness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"da2a21ba-3677-4349-8c02-946121be4f24\">According to data from the latest local homelessness census, the number of unhoused people in St. Johns County has increased since last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-dominant-color=\"8b8e8d\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8b8e8d;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Goff-Family-Shelter-event-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"Leaders from the St. Augustine Society and St. Augustine city officials gathered recently to celebrate the grand opening of the Goff Family Shelter in Lincolnville\" class=\"wp-image-116162 not-transparent\"  \/>Leaders from the St. Augustine Society and St. Augustine city officials gathered recently to celebrate the opening of the Goff Family Shelter in Lincolnville. | Noah Hertz, Jacksonville Today<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"90071580-033a-486d-8540-4a9114c11d5e\">Advocates acknowledge that the annual count is not a comprehensive measure of the number of people without stable housing, but the nonprofit St. Johns County Continuum of Care counted a 16% increase in unhoused individuals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"14fe85ad-e14f-4266-8bea-0abceeed4081\">In 2025, the nonprofit counted 183 sheltered people and 133 unsheltered people. People living in sheltered homelessness are those with temporary housing in an emergency shelter or other facility; people living in unsheltered homelessness are living on the streets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"27c2a3a7-9f37-4521-ae8c-a8bc15736fd8\">This year\u2019s homelessness census in St. Johns County counted fewer sheltered individuals (from 183 in 2025 to 177 in 2026), but the survey counted 190 unsheltered individuals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"7545cf48-43c4-4dda-8491-12271e91686e\">In addition to figures collected by St. Johns County Continuum of Care, the St. Johns County School District reported at the end of the 2025-26 school year that 357 students were living without stable places to sleep.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"d9b27fa6-e675-4413-8218-75908e183011\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jaxtoday.org\/2026\/06\/09\/homeless-increase-northeast-florida\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Numbers increased<\/a> in other parts of Northeast Florida, too.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"970a148d-1f7f-427d-ab77-6c4ce042a113\">But those figures don\u2019t tell the full story, says Dembowski, the St. Augustine Society\u2019s executive director. The survey does not factor for the number of families living with others or arrangements where children areseparated and living with other family members.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"398e8ca4-a159-4aba-b3b3-668db0fb8136\">That\u2019s why the Goff Family Shelter\u2019s goal is to provide more than just services to help families find a new place to live. Dembowski says the shelter\u2019s case workers will help families find jobs, get their kids to daycare and provide other services.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"9cd4aee8-312b-4607-887d-1dc6429daea5\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re living in homelessness trying to figure this out, your primary focus is how am I going to feed my kids? How am I going to bathe my kids? In addition to federal grant funding and other individual donors, shelter heads say Goff family\u2019s funding was instrumental to opening the shelter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"26722bef-b09a-42cc-bce5-c92cfc49141f\">\u201cTo be something like that, it just struck a chord with me,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c1e29dc2-f55f-4a02-839e-79e6d98db560\">Last year, Goff says, his daughter Katie died, and he sees her compassion in the services the St. Augustine Society provides its clients.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"e5320abf-e5b6-4b2a-ae5e-28b9605ccaaa\">\u201cTo me, when I drive past this place, this is like Katie\u2019s place,\u201d Goff says. \u201cWhen I look at this, I feel like it\u2019s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"2d7f808a-1b62-4f2d-a1db-3e713e99e45a\">For people interested in learning more about the St. Augustine Society, Dembowski pointed to the monthly shelter tours the nonprofit offers.
