SAO PAULO (AP) \u2014 Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a> said Thursday that his government has not been successful in trying to negotiate the 50% tariff on Brazilian imports that U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> has threatened to impose. <\/p>\n

Washington has ignored Brazil\u2019s attempts to negotiate ahead of the measure\u2019s expected implementation on Aug. 1., the Brazilian leader said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrazil is used to negotiating,\u201d Lula said. \u201cWe had already 10 meetings with the United States. On May 16, we sent them a letter asking for clarification on the proposals we had made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t respond. They responded through a website,\u201d Lula added, referring to Trump\u2019s post on his social media platform Truth Social<\/a> on July 9, announcing the tariff.<\/p>\n

Trump directly linked the import tax to the trial underway in Brazil<\/a> of his ally, the country\u2019s former President Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>, which he called a \u201cwitch hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than backing down, Brazil\u2019s Supreme Court escalated the case, worsening Bolsonaro\u2019s legal troubles. Federal police has raided Bolsonaro\u2019s home and political office<\/a>, ordered him to wear an ankle monitor, banned him from using social media and levelled other restrictions.<\/p>\n

Lula spoke Thursday in Vale do Jequitinhonha, one of Brazil\u2019s poorest regions in the state of Minas Gerais, repeating his mantra of needing to \u201cdefend\u201d Brazil\u2019s resources \u2014 a message he has adopted since the trade dispute escalated.<\/p>\n

In related developments, Brazil\u2019s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin told reporters in the capital, Brasilia, that he had a 50-minute phone call last Saturday with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Alckmin, who also serves as Brazil\u2019s minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, declined to share details of the conversation, saying it was confidential.<\/p>\n

\u201cI reiterated Brazil\u2019s willingness to negotiate \u2014 that\u2019s our position,\u201d Alckmin, said. \u201cBrazil never left the table. We didn\u2019t create this problem, but we want to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, Brazil raised concerns on Wednesday at a World Trade Organization<\/a> meeting, arguing that arbitrary tariffs violate the organization\u2019s core principles but making no mention of Trump or the United States, <\/p>\n

\u201cArbitrary tariffs, chaotically announced and implemented, are disrupting global value chains and risk throwing the world economy into a spiral of high prices and stagnation,\u201d Brazil\u2019s Ambassador Philip Fox-Drummond Gough said.<\/p>\n

WTO member states are witnessing \u201can extremely dangerous shift toward the use of tariffs as a tool to interfere in the domestic affairs of third countries,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
