\n\tDeadline reported exclusively<\/a> earlier this month that James Bond<\/a> producers and director\u00a0Denis Villeneuve<\/a>\u00a0have begun informing talent who have made the next round of auditions, which will occur later this summer. There is no confirmed list, but that hasn\u2019t stopped fans and the media from throwing out names like Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson and Jacob Elordi. But one person who knows something about casting 007<\/a> says none of them fit the bill.<\/p>\n

\n\tDebbie McWilliams<\/a> cast the last three Bonds and all the films they were in, from For Your Eyes Only\u00a0to No Time to Die. That\u2019s 40 years in His Majesty\u2019s Secret Service before she retired. McWilliams wants to see \u201csomebody who is completely out of the blue.\u201d She adds that it is \u201cabsolutely essential\u201d Bond remains \u201ca total enigma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe explained her stance<\/a> to The Independent: \u201cWe want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that\u2019s what spies are. We don\u2019t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives. We never want to see him at home. And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He\u2019s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don\u2019t, then you\u2019ve lost the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe woman currently busy casting<\/a> the next Bond seems to agree.<\/p>\n

\n\tBaz Bamigboye reported exclusively<\/a> for Deadline in May that his conversation with casting director Nina Gold<\/a> was not about film or TV personalities, but centered more on actors who\u2019d trod the boards in London\u2019s West End.<\/p>\n

\n\tBamigboye pointed out that what caught then Bond grande dame Barbara Broccoli\u2019s eye was the combination of Daniel Craig\u2019s work in Matthew Vaughn\u2019s 2004 film\u00a0Layer Cake, what she\u2019d seen of him on stage in David Rabe\u2019s\u00a0Hurlyburly\u00a0at the Old Vic and his performance opposite Michael Gambon in Caryl Churchill\u2019s\u00a0A Number\u00a0at the Royal Court Theatre.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe noted Gold nodding when he rattled off a list of potential contenders: David Shields, who was so good in James Graham\u2019s award winning play Punch which ran in the Nottingham Playhouse, the Young Vic and on Shaftesbury Avenue at the Apollo;\u00a0Bridgerton\u2019s\u00a0Luke Thompson who\u2019s very much a theater animal having acquitted himself well opposite James Norton and Omari Douglas in Ivo van Hove\u2019s production of\u00a0A Little Life. He will next appear with Keira Knightley and Stephen Dillane in the stage adaptation of\u00a0The Lives of Others\u00a0in the fall.\u00a0That\u2019s right about the time the big decision may be made by Bond\u2019s new gatekeepers, producers\u00a0Amy Pascal<\/a>\u00a0and David Heyman \u2014 along with Villeneuve and Amazon MGM brass.<\/p>\n
