Kristin Chenoweth<\/strong> belted out \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d with everything she had at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City for the 2025 NBA finals on Sunday, June 22, but her rendition garnered some harsh criticism on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One X user called it \u201chorrible\u201d and another person added, \u201cShe would have probably been fine if she hadn\u2019t tried to show off by carrying that one note too long.\u201d A third critic wrote, \u201cWhy fix what\u2019s not broken? Changing it up doesn\u2019t make it better.\u201d<\/p>\n

That night, the Wicked star, 56, appeared to casually hit back at the backlash with a cryptic quote shared to her Instagram Story.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone had a bone to pick with Chenoweth\u2019s performance. Other fans rushed to her defense.<\/p>\n

One enthusiastic X user quipped, \u201cNot even 30 seconds in and she already made 3 people cry and 1 ref rethink his calls.\u201d Another fan gushed, \u201cPerfect in every way. Ranks in the top five best ever renditions of the beautiful \u2018Star-Spangled Banner.\u2019 Brought tears to my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the mixed reactions, Chenoweth stunned during her performance wearing light wash jeans, a gray Oklahoma Thunder t-shirt and a pair of show-stopping, sparkly, knee-high boots. They were so impressive of a statement piece that some of her fans couldn\u2019t help but praise her style choice!<\/p>\n

In a video<\/a> shared by the Oklahoma Thunder\u2019s official account on Instagram, Chenoweth spoke out on what the national anthem meant to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do love this song and I take it very seriously,\u201d she explained. \u201cI definitely do my own version.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opportunity to sing at the major sporting event was also special to her as the Broadway star is from Oklahoma herself and has been a \u201chuge basketball fan\u201d for her \u201cwhole life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chenoweth revealed that the team even served as a namesake for a beloved member of her family.<\/p>\n

\u201cEight years ago, I named my dog Thunder,\u201d she said in the clip.<\/p>\n

Prior to the event, she also told \u00a0told The Associated Press <\/a>that she \u201cnever\u201d misses one of their games unless she\u2019s performing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a cheerleader in high school in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and I loved football, but my favorite was basketball,\u201d she continued. \u201cI like how much of a team player you\u2019ve got to be. \u2026 And this is my team.\u201d<\/p>\n
