{"id":90349,"date":"2025-07-25T03:37:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T03:37:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/90349\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T03:37:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T03:37:16","slug":"jacksonville-unveils-a-plan-to-eliminate-traffic-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/90349\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville unveils a plan to eliminate traffic fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jacksonville.gov\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Jacksonville<\/a><\/strong>, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians take their lives in their hands on local roads amid heavy traffic and distracted drivers and environmental hazards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year alone, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/traffic-crash-reports\/crash-dashboard\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles<\/a><\/strong> reports that 80 people have been killed on local roadways, with 5,260 crashes with injuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And Mayor\u00a0<strong>Donna Deegan<\/strong> has seen enough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI think I speak for all of us when I say that no one should fear walking to school, biking to work, or driving to see family. Vision Zero promises a safer Jacksonville for every person, in every neighborhood \u2014 no matter how they get around town,\u201d Deegan said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Indeed, there is room for improvement. More than 3 out of 5 pedestrians are injured crossing the street. Nearly 45% of bicycle crashes happen at intersections. And more than 60% of motorcycle crashes involve drugs or alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-740415 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FLPolitics-May-2025-728x90-1-scaled-e1748483753690.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The city\u2019s Vision Zero plan has a lofty goal: to eliminate traffic fatalities and cut injuries in half within the next decade, as part of what the report calls a \u201ccultural shift that prioritizes safety in transportation planning, enforcement, and everyday behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The city has identified dozens of intersections where accidents are more likely to happen, and in an effort to remedy those conditions, capital budgets will eye traffic calming, pedestrian and bicyclist infrastructure improvements, and speed management. Slowing down cars, the logic goes, will make people more aware.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMayor Deegan often speaks of a new day in Jacksonville,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Matt Fall<\/strong>, Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Jacksonville. \u201cI believe this plan reflects that spirit. It\u2019s a new era for transportation safety in our city \u2014 one where traffic deaths are no longer treated as inevitable, but as preventable.
