After Burge’s death in 1972, Angelo Donghia, Burge’s mentee and partner at Burge-Donghia Interiors, bought the house and brought Gifford back to expand its footprint. (It was apparently an acrimonious pairing.) According to Architectural Digest, Lam, who sold the property in 2022, was looking for a house inspired by a “cedar sake box,” which seems to be exactly what he found.

The living room featured in this listing photo opens up to the back deck with a private walkway to the beach.
Photo: Kendall Gregory/Compass

The primary bedroom has a Noguchi lamp hanging over the bed, as shown in this listing photo.
Photo: Kendall Gregory/Compass

After Lam bought the property in the mid-2010s, he worked with architect and interior designer Neal Beckstedt to fancy it up while maintaining the original structure’s clean lines. Today, it stands at 2,000 square feet with white cedar everywhere, black slate flooring, and Noguchi lamps hanging above the primary bed. The bathroom is encased with polycarbonate walls to let in light but keep out prying eyes.
