{"id":905121,"date":"2026-07-01T09:29:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T09:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/905121\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T09:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T09:29:14","slug":"houston-concert-watch-7-1-willie-nelson-kam-franklin-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/905121\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston Concert Watch 7\/1: Willie Nelson, Kam Franklin and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bob Dylan is, to put it charitably, a mercurial character.\u00a0 Some might characterize him as \u201csquirrely.\u201d\u00a0 But he is Bob Dylan, after all, so he can get away with plenty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details are scarce, but it has been reported that guitarist Bob Britt abruptly quit Dylan\u2019s band a few days ago.\u00a0 Britt is being kind of cagey \u2013 and who can blame him? \u2013 releasing a statement proclaiming, \u201cI was not fired but left of my own accord for reasons I would prefer to keep private. I will miss my band mates and crew.\u201d\u00a0 Gee, no mention of missing Zimmy too?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dylan\u2019s new guitarist is Joel Paterson, a musician based in Chicago, who is probably approaching his new gig with some trepidation.\u00a0 Working for Dylan must be tough.\u00a0 I am reminded of a Houston Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpress.com\/music\/duke-robillard-spanks-the-plank-on-latest-album-16284341\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with guitarist Duke Robillard, who toured with Bob in 2013.\u00a0 Robillard said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened, but all of a sudden, the stuff that he liked that I played on the last tour, he seemed to hate\u2026and he was saying really rude things to me. I said, \u2018You know what, I\u2019m 65 years old, and I don\u2019t need this shit.\u2019 I just don\u2019t know how it went so south. Bizarre things were happening those last few days. My wife asked me, when I called her up, \u2018Where are you playing tonight, the Twilight Zone?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ticket Alert<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most music fans who have lived in Houston for any amount of time have seen a ZZ Top show.\u00a0 But what the hell, why not see another one?\u00a0 The next opportunity to groove with \u201cThat Little Old Band from Texas\u201d is on Saturday, October 3, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandscenter.org\/events\/2026\/zz-top\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cynthia Woods Pavilion<\/a>.\u00a0 Cheap Trick is set to open, and it appears that other bands will be added to the bill at some point.\u00a0 Tickets go on sale this Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Indigo Girls showed up on the radio in 1989 with \u201cCloser to Fine,\u201d the song represented a refreshing contrast to the hair metal that was holding sway at the time.\u00a0 Many years and many albums later, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are still at it.\u00a0 You can catch them on Thursday, October 15, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/us.atgtickets.com\/events\/indigo-girls\/smart-financial-centre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Financial Centre<\/a>.\u00a0 Presales today, general sale on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pete Yorn will play the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prekindle.com\/event\/89121-pete-yorn-houston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heights Theater<\/a> on Monday, October 23, and tickets for the show are on sale now.  It may not seem that long ago, but Yorn\u2019s tour is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his debut album, musicforthemorningafter.\u00a0 \u2018Cause Knowledge is Power:\u00a0 Yorn wrote the score for the 2000 Jim Carrey comedy Me, Myself and Irene.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t really know if the band name Dinosaur Jr. has anything to do with J Mascis\u2019 guitar tone, but I do know that he can make a roar come out of his speakers that sometimes resembles that of a T-rex.\u00a0 Macsis and crew will crank it up at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketmaster.com\/dinosaur-jr-fall-tour-2026-with-houston-texas-11-04-2026\/event\/3A0064D9A11E9F73?_gl=1*1pcqjr9*_ga*OTc2NjUzNTA1LjE3NzkyMDc2Mzk.*_ga_C1T806G4DF*czE3ODI4NzE3NjckbzE5JGcwJHQxNzgyODcxNzY3JGo2MCRsMCRoMA..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House of Blues<\/a> on Wednesday, November 4, and ticket are on sale now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s in a name?\u00a0 In the case of Bowling for Soup, the band\u2019s name comes from its modification of the title of a Steve Martin comedy bit called \u201cBowling for Shit.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m assuming that this name was not run past a focus group. \u00a0But what would you expect from a band that was influenced by the Ramones? \u00a0Catch Wichita Falls\u2019 native sons on Thursday, November 5, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketmaster.com\/bowling-for-soup-houston-texas-11-05-2026\/event\/3A0064D115F0A806?_gl=1*1pcqjr9*_ga*OTc2NjUzNTA1LjE3NzkyMDc2Mzk.*_ga_C1T806G4DF*czE3ODI4NzE3NjckbzE5JGcwJHQxNzgyODcxNzY3JGo2MCRsMCRoMA..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House of Blues<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Concerts This Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Houston\u2019s Kam Franklin (lead vocalist for the Suffers) is gearing up for the release of her first solo album, Land of the Neon Sun, which will drop at the end of August.\u00a0 Franklin is performing at <a href=\"https:\/\/continentalclub.com\/houston#event=78367537;instance=20260702200000?popup=1&amp;lang=en-US\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shoeshine Charley\u2019s Big Top Lounge<\/a> (just a couple of doors down from the Continental Club) on Thursday.\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss this chance to see one of the bayou city\u2019s greatest talents up close and personal.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are certain guitarists who inspire other guitar players.\u00a0 And by \u201cinspire,\u201d I mean that, after hearing them play, people say things like, \u201cJeez, I gotta practice more.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cI suck.\u201d\u00a0 Monte Montgomery falls into this category.\u00a0 You can hear him tear up the fretboard on Friday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgonigels.com\/shows\/monte-montgomery-3\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mucky Duck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austin gets Willie Nelson\u2019s traveling Outlaw Music Festival on the Fourth of July (the date when many of his legendary \u201cpicnics\u201d were held), but Houston, by gad, gets him on Sunday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandscenter.org\/events\/2026\/outlaw-music-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition to Willie, the bill features Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Stephen Wilson Jr., Margo Price, Lukas Nelson and Lily Meola.\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of music to fit into one day, so things will get underway early, at 2 p.m.\u00a0 \u2018Cause Knowledge is Power: the first picnic was held in 1973 on a ranch near Dripping Springs, with Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Doug Sahm, Sammi Smith and Tom T.
