{"id":906322,"date":"2026-07-01T22:17:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T22:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/906322\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T22:17:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T22:17:44","slug":"beth-israel-deaconess-resident-doctors-secure-union-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/906322\/","title":{"rendered":"Beth Israel Deaconess resident doctors secure union contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Unionized resident doctors and fellows at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/01\/24\/business\/facing-rampant-burnout-800-beth-israel-hospital-doctors-training-vote-unionize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/01\/24\/business\/facing-rampant-burnout-800-beth-israel-hospital-doctors-training-vote-unionize\/\">Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center<\/a> have ratified their first contract after nearly a year of negotiations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">The first-year resident salary at Beth Israel Deaconess was $76,680 before the union formed in 2025. Under the new deal, first-years will make $92,929, representing an 8 percent increase plus a $10,000 annual stipend. Base salaries will increase 2.5 percent on June 30, 2027, and another 2.5 percent on June 30, 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">The agreement also includes reimbursement for required medical licensing exams and 12 weeks of parental leave, among other benefits.<b> <\/b>It applies to more than 800 doctors represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents, a part of the Service Employees International Union. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">The contract, which still has to be approved by hospital leaders, will expire in 2029. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cThis fair contract is about more than improved working conditions,\u201d said Dr. Kevin Makhoul, a psychiatry resident and bargaining committee member. \u201cIt is about strengthening patient care and demonstrating what is possible when physicians stand together.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Sarah Finlaw, spokesperson for Beth Israel Deaconess\u2019s parent system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/01\/24\/business\/beth-israel-lahey-finances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/01\/24\/business\/beth-israel-lahey-finances\/\">Beth Israel Lahey Health<\/a>, said in a statement that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to providing top-notch patient care. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cOur physicians are an essential part of the BIDMC care team, and we look forward to continuing our work together to support their success and the patients we serve,\u201d Finlaw said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">The health system, the second-largest in the state after Mass General Brigham, has grown dramatically in recent years, now employing 42,000 people and spanning more than a dozen hospital campuses and other facilities. The system is also deeply entrenched in Boston\u2019s ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/03\/23\/business\/mgb-cancer-nurse-practitioner-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/03\/23\/business\/mgb-cancer-nurse-practitioner-union\/\">battle over cancer care<\/a>, as it prepares to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/02\/22\/business\/dana-farber-mass-general-brigham-beth-israel-cancer-fight\/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link&amp;p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/02\/22\/business\/dana-farber-mass-general-brigham-beth-israel-cancer-fight\/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link&amp;p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\">partner with Dana-Farber<\/a> following the storied cancer institute\u2019s breakup with MGB. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Beth Israel anesthesia resident Dr. Matt Sparling said he has already felt the pressure of the hospital\u2019s recent growth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201c[Beth Israel Deaconess] management is asking residents to absorb additional clinical responsibilities without corresponding compensation or support,\u201d Sparling said. \u201cThey are changing our working conditions to accommodate expansion needs and attempting to justify the escalation as an educational opportunity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">The Beth Israel union is the latest group of residents in the Boston area to secure a contract amid a nationwide push to increase protections for doctors who work long hours for relatively little pay as they complete their medical training. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Around 2,600 residents and fellows at MGB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/05\/23\/business\/mass-general-brigham-residents-union-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/05\/23\/business\/mass-general-brigham-residents-union-contract\/\">approved their first union contract<\/a> in May 2025, increasing wages by 7.5 percent over the three-year deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">At Boston Medical Center, about 750 residents and fellows are currently negotiating a new contract to replace one that expired on June 30. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Meanwhile, unionized nurses at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and unionized providers at MGB Home Care plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/06\/26\/business\/mgb-nurses-strike\/?p1=StaffPage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/06\/26\/business\/mgb-nurses-strike\/?p1=StaffPage\">strike beginning July 8<\/a> over stalled contract negotiations. The Brigham nurses authorized a one-day walkout, but will not be allowed to return to the hospital for another four days, as the hospital is contractually obligated to provide temporary nursing staff with five days of work.
