When Denton\u2019s Deep Blue Something<\/a> found fame with \u201cBreakfast at Tiffany\u2019s\u201d \u2014 the catchiest non-rhyming song of the mid-\u201890s \u2014 a lot of hipper, grittier bands around D-FW were miffed.<\/p>\n

Now, decades later, \u201cwe\u2019re all at an age where it\u2019s cool to not have to be cool anymore,\u201d the band\u2019s lead guitarist, Toby Pipes, told The Dallas Morning News in 2022.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a good description for Lunar Phase, Deep Blue Something\u2019s newly-released studio album, its first in 24 years. <\/p>\n

Instead of worrying about being chic or edgy, the group delivers well-crafted guitar-rock tunes steeped in melancholia and packed with sharp melodies. High points arrive in \u201cSaint Morrissey\u201d \u2014 a nod to the band\u2019s love of the Smiths \u2014 and the anthemic \u201cRock Island Line,\u201d not to be confused with the folk standard.<\/p>\n

After playing an album-release concert Saturday at Billy Bob\u2019s, Deep Blue Something plans to perform again in North Texas in October, although a date has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
