It&#8217;s a change that has already been met with opposition, but the Administration seems determined to go ahead anyway.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\"><strong>Missed Nvidia in 2009? However, the June 2 communication stated that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/terms\/u\/us-treasury\/?utm_source=yahoo-host-full&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=article&amp;referring_guid=f5192ce0-8b4f-4cf8-b40e-d7b832e511a7\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.S.%20Treasury;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;U.S. Treasury&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. Treasury<\/a> is moving forward with phasing out paper checks. Specifically, Social Security is anticipating that it will complete the &#8220;full transition&#8221; to making payments electronically for &#8220;all&#8221; beneficiaries this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The SSA encouraged people to act quickly, before they are forced to do so, and provided instructions on how. These include signing into (or signing up for) a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/myaccount\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:my%20Social%20Security%20account;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;my Social Security account&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">my Social Security account<\/a> and adding your bank information, or asking your bank to send Social Security your direct deposit information electronically.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">For anyone without a bank account, the SSA also announced that electronic payments were available on a prepaid debit card through enrollment in the Direct Express\u00ae program.  <\/p>\n<p>        Why is this change unpopular?          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Unfortunately, the change to electronic benefits is not a popular one, and the SSA has gotten some pushback already.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The issue is that some people may struggle to manage this transition and may end up not being able to access benefits at all. The AP reported that advocates have numerous concerns about the transition, including:  <\/p>\n<ul class=\"yf-1jsc1up\">\n<li class=\"yf-1jsc1up\">\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Benefits recipients who do not currently have bank accounts and who may need a paper check to open one in the future  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-1jsc1up\">\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Unbanked and unhoused people who are unable to manage the digital process to transition to direct deposits or even to a debit card  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-1jsc1up\">\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">People who have mental health issues or other issues that prevent them from opening a bank account, and that make them wary of dealing with traditional financial institutions like banks  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-1jsc1up\">\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">People who don&#8217;t know about the changes because they don&#8217;t check their mail, and who don&#8217;t understand why they are not getting checks or how to fix it  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">These are very real concerns that are not entirely addressed by the Social Security Administration, even though the agency sought to provide reassurance that a debit card is available as an alternative for the unbanked.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The SSA did say paper checks could continue for those who request a waiver through the U.S. Treasury, but of course, people who need this type of waiver will likely struggle greatly to complete the necessary steps to make that request.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Still, the transition is happening, as the June news shows, and anyone depending on Social Security for an income source will need to plan for it if they aren&#8217;t already getting their Social Security income deposited or sent via debit card.  <\/p>\n<p>       The\u00a0$23,760\u00a0Social Security bonus most retirees completely overlook         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">If you&#8217;re like most Americans, you&#8217;re a few years (or more) behind on your retirement savings.
