{"id":91016,"date":"2025-07-25T09:26:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T09:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/91016\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T09:26:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T09:26:14","slug":"georgia-artist-amy-sherald-pulls-smithsonian-show-citing-censorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/91016\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia artist Amy Sherald pulls Smithsonian show, citing censorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Explore<a class=\"headline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/entertainment\/arts--theater\/first-lady-portrait-artist-amy-sherald-comes-spelman\/TpBH9WAFl35o0glmQH2vzL\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">From 2019: First Lady portrait artist Amy Sherald comes to Spelman<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"7\">\u201cInternal concerns had been raised,\u201d Sherald, a fine arts major at Clark Atlanta University, said in a statement, about her painting \u201cTrans Forming Liberty,\u201d which features a Black, transgender individual with hot pink hair and eyebrows wearing a royal blue gown posing in the position of the Statue of Liberty with the liberty flame replaced by blooming flowers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"8\">\u201cThese concerns led to discussions about removing the work from the exhibition,\u201d her statement said. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that institutional fear shaped by a broader climate of political hostility toward trans lives played a role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">The Smithsonian and other art institutions receiving federal grants have been under scrutiny since March, when President Donald Trump issued an executive order titled \u201c<a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History<\/a>\u201d that asserted the country had witnessed an effort to rewrite national history. Driskell Prize by Atlanta&#8217;s High Museum of Art<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"15\">\u201cPortraiture has always been my way of asserting presence \u2014 of creating visibility where there has too often been erasure,\u201d Sherald wrote in a letter published by The New York Times that the artist wrote to Lonnie G. Bunch III, the secretary of the Smithsonian, on Wednesday. \u201cWhen that visibility is compromised, even subtly, it alters not only the artwork, but the message it carries. I cannot consent to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">The Smithsonian issued a statement: \u201cWhile we understand Amy\u2019s decision to withdraw her show from the National Portrait Gallery, we are disappointed that Smithsonian audiences will not have an opportunity to experience \u2018American Sublime.\u2019 \u2026 Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement with the artist. We remain appreciative and inspired by Ms. Sherald, her artwork and commitment to portraiture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"17\">The exhibit, the largest presentation of the artist\u2019s work to date, was organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
