Deputy fires on driver in alleged stolen vehicle after brief chase, suspect hospitalized<\/a><\/p>\nJoshua Ryan Garcia, 34, was released from the hospital and is currently booked into the Bexar County Jail.<\/p>\n
Garcia faces charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a State Jail Felony, and Evading Arrest with a Motor Vehicle, a Third-Degree Felony, according to the Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s Office (BCSO).<\/p>\n
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. A sheriff’s deputy received a hit from his automated license plate reader, indicating that a car reported stolen had passed them, BCSO said.<\/p>\n
With around one year on the force, the deputy attempted to initiate a stop of the vehicle. That vehicle, a newer model maroon BMW convertible, fled from the deputy at high speed.<\/p>\n
The high-speed pursuit lasted one to two minutes before the BMW stopped on a dead-end road at the 7600 block of Dove Drive, in a residential neighborhood.<\/p>\n
The deputy got out and attempted to make contact with Garcia when, according to the deputy, the suspect came back at them.<\/p>\n
The deputy opened fire, striking Garcia three to four times. A woman who was the passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries resulting from the vehicle crashing after the deputy opened fire. Garcia was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. <\/p>\n
Garcia, whom Sheriff Salazar says has a lengthy criminal history and has been convicted of sex crimes involving children. He also faces additional charges from out-of-county active warrants, including Terroristic Threat (Class A Misdemeanor, Kleberg County), two counts of Possession of Marijuana (Class A Misdemeanor, Atascosa County), Violation of a Protective Order (Class A Misdemeanor, Kleberg County), Harassment (Class B Misdemeanor, Kleberg County), and Driving With License Invalid (Class B Misdemeanor, Atascosa County).<\/p>\n
