HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 As FIFA draws fans from around the world to Houston, many international visitors are spending America\u2019s 250th Independence Day experiencing an American Fourth of July for the very first time at the City of Houston\u2019s Freedom Over Texas celebration.<\/p>\n

The annual event transformed Eleanor Tinsley Park into a showcase of American traditions, complete with patriotic displays, live music, food and fireworks.<\/p>\n

FIFA creates more than soccer memories<\/p>\n

For Houston resident Michael Bradley, seeing visitors embrace the celebration has been one of the most rewarding parts of the holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing all the people from around the world… it\u2019s really been an eye opening event… to see people come in with different perspectives and they\u2019re just so thankful for the way that people treated them. It\u2019s just really been a really wholesome wake up call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bradley said FIFA has created an opportunity for Houstonians to share their city and their culture with people from across the globe.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s historical\u2019<\/p>\n

Among those visitors was Aaron Van Leer of Belgium, who traveled to the United States for the World Cup. His first trip to America happened to coincide with the nation\u2019s 250th Independence Day celebration.<\/p>\n

Van Leer said the milestone carries a significance that extends beyond U.S. borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s historical, I guess, because, you know, for a country that\u2019s only 250 years old, they have so much rich history… some countries, they have like 10,000 years, and they have not accomplished, not even a tenth of what the United States have been able to… so yeah, just historical in itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

A stop in Houston for Independence Day<\/p>\n

Visitors from Germany also adjusted their travel plans to experience Houston\u2019s Fourth of July festivities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe come one day earlier to see the big party to Independence Day… The fireworks… and the people in the stars and stripes here, it is amazing,\u201d said Heiko, who was visiting with her husband.<\/p>\n

Houston on the world stage<\/p>\n

Bradley said international events like FIFA are creating opportunities for cultural exchange that extend well beyond the matches themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe soccer games have really brought this energy… everyone\u2019s actually coming together… it\u2019s nice to see everyone repping the red, white and blue… it\u2019s just a good vibe out here.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many visitors, the World Cup may have been the reason they came to Houston.<\/p>\n

But as America celebrated its 250th birthday, they left with more than memories of soccer. They experienced American traditions firsthand while Houston welcomed the world for one of the nation\u2019s biggest Independence Day celebrations.<\/p>\n
