A California farmer\u2019s jaw-dropping offer to give away 125,000 pounds of free nectarines<\/a> sparked a feeding frenzy that stripped his orchard bare in a matter of days.<\/p>\n

Central Valley grower Cesar Mora of Reedley said the overwhelming response was beyond anything he or his family imagined after announcing Monday that the public could pick the fruit for free instead of letting another harvest rot on the trees amid a bitter legal battle with an agriculture company.<\/p>\n

Now, Mora says every last nectarine has been picked from the orchard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat started as one farmer\u2019s refusal to let his harvest go to waste turned into something none of us could have predicted,\u201d a message on his website read<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mora claims agriculture giant Giumarra blocked him from packing or selling the stone fruit<\/a> amid a dispute over ownership, despite his insistence he\u2019s personally grown the crop for the past decade.<\/p>\n

The farmer said when he opened his orchard they had \u201cno idea what to expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first day was modest, a steady stream of community members coming out to pick fruit and learn Cesar\u2019s story,\u201d per the website.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then something happened. Word spread. People shared. And every single day the crowd grew bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The farmer said they had to \u201ccompletely change\u201d their operation several times due to the thousands of people who swarmed his orchard<\/a>, which even lead to the giveaway being temporarily shut down by the California Highway Patrol for safety reasons.<\/p>\n

Mora said they first switched from having people pick the fruit off the trees, to a bin system, where fruit was already picked.\u00a0 And lastly, to a full line system where volunteers handed bags directly to the community to make sure everything stayed organized and everyone got the chance to take home fruit.<\/p>\n

The farmer said they had to \u201ccompletely change\u201d their operation several times due to the thousands of people who swarmed his orchard. gofundme<\/p>\n

He said by the end of the week more than 6,000 people had visited his farm, taking home around 182,000 pounds of fresh nectarines that he said \u201cwould have otherwise rotted on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo every person who came out, stood in line, volunteered their time, donated to Cesar\u2019s legal fund, and shared his story, thank you,\u201d the message read.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou showed a farmer that his community has his back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mora also noted how his fight isn\u2019t over yet and said his trial is scheduled for July 20th.<\/p>\n

Following all the publicity from the fruit giveaway, Mora said he received two letters, one was a cease and desist from Guimarra demanding that he stop the giveaway and the other a \u201cpreservation of rights,\u201d calling for a full accounting of every single pound of fruit he gave away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t crown them and I don\u2019t bow the knee to them either. I won\u2019t bow to a false king,\u201d Mora said in a TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The legal case has been working its way through the courts since 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiumarra claims ownership of the variety of fruit Cesar grows and has sued him for breach of contract,\u201d according to a GoFundMe<\/a> for Mora. Cesar disputes both their ownership claim and the validity of the contract, and is fighting back by suing Giumarra for fraud and misrepresentation.<\/strong><\/p>\n
