Longtime NBA assistant coach David Vanterpool is moving from his role as the Washington Wizards\u2019 lead assistant coach under Brian Keefe to a front-office position with the franchise, a team source told The Athletic. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because Vanterpool\u2019s move to the front office has not been formally announced.<\/p>\n

Vanterpool, 53, joined the Wizards coaching staff before the start of the 2023-24 season. His 13-year tenure as an NBA assistant coach also includes prior stops with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he worked closely with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum; a two-year stint as the Minnesota Timberwolves\u2019 associate head coach; and one season with the Brooklyn Nets.<\/p>\n

Vanterpool was a pro scout for the Oklahoma City Thunder\u00a0from 2010-12, working alongside Keefe, who was a Thunder assistant coach; Wizards general manager Will Dawkins, who was the Thunder\u2019s scouting coordinator; and Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger, who was the Thunder\u2019s assistant general manager and team counsel.<\/p>\n

Adam Caporn, 44, will become Keefe\u2019s lead assistant coach, the team source confirmed. Caporn joined Keefe\u2019s coaching staff before the 2024-25 season, and he also serves as the head coach of Australia\u2019s men\u2019s national team.<\/p>\n

Former Georgetown Hoyas and New York Knicks great Patrick Ewing is on track to join Keefe\u2019s staff as an assistant coach<\/a>. Ewing, 63, brings extensive experience as an NBA assistant coach and also worked as the Hoyas\u2019 head coach for six seasons.<\/p>\n

Steve Clifford, 64, will also join the Wizards as a coaching consultant, the team source said.<\/p>\n

Clifford\u2019s NBA head-coaching experience includes two stints with the Charlotte Hornets, who were known as the Charlotte Bobcats during Clifford\u2019s first season at the helm, and one stint with the Orlando Magic.<\/p>\n

Clifford spent last season as a coaching consultant for the Phoenix Suns and worked as a coaching consultant for the Nets during the 2021-22 season.
