A local business<\/a> inspired by the owner\u2019s journey from loss to healing<\/a>, has opened a new storefront in Joliet.<\/p>\n

Karen Mahoney\u2019s Soul Sanctuary Shop is located 600 Theodore St., Suite A, Joliet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The store features wax melts and accessories, shower steamers, and candles and incense.<\/p>\n

\u201cScents can bring back memories,\u201d Mahoney said. \u201cWhen you smell something, it can remind you of something in your childhood or a good time or a bad time in life. It can evoke happiness, maybe sometimes sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n

The store also carries handcrafted goat milk soaps and natural dish soaps from Spain Family Farm and candles and incense sticks, according to the Soul Sanctuary Shop Facebook page.<\/p>\n

Shoppers will also find inspirational mugs, mindfulness books<\/a>, anxiety and stress-relief resources, journals, and coloring books, according to the Facebook page.<\/p>\n

More than 10 years ago, Mahoney learned \u201cthe art of scent, intention, and mindful craftsmanship\u201d and began creating aromatherapy-inspired products, according to the Soul Sanctuary Shop website.<\/p>\n

After a series of losses \u2013 job loss, divorce, death of her father and relinquishing her first small business (Me & Koko) \u2013 Mahoney said she embarked on a \u201chealing journey,\u201d which helped her learn to care for herself.<\/p>\n

Mahoney, who has five grown children, \u201ca Cheagle who runs the house\u201d and a \u201csweet, handsome Black Lab,\u201d said she was used to putting everyone else first, she said.<\/p>\n

So, Mahoney designed her storefront to be a healing \u201cdestination\u201d for others with a distinct \u201cmood and vibe\u201d for reading and working on laptops, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really just want to make this a comforting space,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n

Mahoney signed the lease in February.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe space was in deplorable condition, so I had a three-month build-out, and my kids and I did it all ourselves: painting, tearing down a wall, scraping paint off windows,\u201d Mahoney said. \u201cA whole lot of repairs and love were put into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahoney said she furnished her shop with \u201cFacebook marketplace finds, thrift store and garage sale treasures.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd donations<\/a> from wonderful people who believed in me,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n

She plans to offer candle-pouring workshops, girls\u2019 night out events, a small community<\/a> library where people \u201ctake a book and leave a book\u201d and a cooler of healthy bottled drinks patrons can purchase,” she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have some bistro tables where people can sit and relax and nice music playing,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n
