It began around 1:19 a.m. when law enforcement responded to 29 Ocean Blvd., Attorney General John M. Formella, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall and Hampton Police Chief Alexander J. Reno said in a joint statement. Arriving officers found a 23-year-old male and a 25-year-old female suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. Nearby, at the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue, officers of the Hampton Police Department made contact with a suspect in the shooting. He was later identified as Tyshawn Cooper, 21, of South Carolina. “During that interaction, the male pulled out a handgun and raised it. He then shot himself in the head while an officer fired one gunshot contemporaneously,” Formella’s office wrote. While an autopsy determined the officer did not cause Cooper’s death, Formella said the incident will be subject to a full deadly force incident investigation. That’s expected to include formal interviews of the officer involved next week. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Several streets in the area were closed during the initial investigation.
