Friday night estimates had it at $16-17 million. Deadline\u2019s Saturday morning update bumped it to <strong>$18 million<\/strong>. The Sunday number blew through all of them, nearly <strong>40% above projections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Numbers Hollywood Didn\u2019t See Coming<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young Washington made <strong>$7.6 million on Friday alone<\/strong>, more than double what Supergirl managed on its entire second Friday ($3.6 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It lands in third place for the weekend, behind only Minions &amp; Monsters, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/minions-monsters-box-office-franchise-low-too-smart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bombed to a franchise-low $39.5 million three-day opening<\/a>, and Toy Story 5 in its third weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a per-theater basis, it\u2019s punching way above its footprint: roughly <strong>$7,700 per screen<\/strong> from 2,700 locations, in the same neighborhood as the Minions\u2019 ~$9,900 average across 4,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it more than doubled Supergirl, <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/supergirl-box-office-second-weekend-collapse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which collapsed in its second weekend<\/a> \u2014 now an estimated full 80% dive \u2014 to an $8.5-9 million. Audiences handed it a <strong>92% score<\/strong>, an <strong>A CinemaScore<\/strong>, and an <strong>81% definite recommend<\/strong> on PostTrak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hold that 81% up against the other big opener: Minions &amp; Monsters posted a <strong>58% definite recommend<\/strong> \u2014 the exact stat fueling the theory that Illumination made the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/minions-monsters-box-office-franchise-low-too-smart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ctoo smart\u201d for its own audience<\/a> \u2014 despite earning <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/minions-monsters-reviews-rotten-tomatoes-score-franchise-highest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the best reviews in franchise history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same weekend, opposite directions. The franchise with a 91% critics score opened to a franchise low. The movie critics rated rotten beat its projection by 40%. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scoreboard that matters \u2014 the one where people buy tickets and then tell their friends to \u2014 belongs to George Washington.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1134\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/young-washingtonangel-studios.avif\" alt=\"Young Washingtonangel Studios\" class=\"wp-image-1006346\"   fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Sound of Freedom Playbook, Again<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this is an accident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erwin (I Can Only Imagine, Jesus Revolution) and Angel timed the release to America\u2019s 250th birthday and openly campaigned since October to make it the No. 1 movie in the country on July 4th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget is estimated in the $20 million range, meaning Young Washington roughly matched it in just three days, with an A CinemaScore promising legs through the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angel has run this play before. Sound of Freedom opened July 4th weekend in 2023 to a $19 million three-day start that Hollywood dismissed, then legged out to $250 million worldwide on a $14.5 million budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audiences keep telling Hollywood exactly what they\u2019ll pay for, and this weekend they said it three different ways: a franchise low for the brand that changed its formula, a 76% collapse for the $170 million tentpole <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmicbook.news\/supergirl-40m-opening-loses-toy-story-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they rejected on sight<\/a>, and a 40% overperformance for a $20 million movie about George Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only people still calling these movies \u201csurprises\u201d work in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>Matt McGloin is the editor-in-chief and publisher of Cosmic Book News, the independent entertainment news site he founded in 2008.
