The film has been at the center of a censorship battle and tells the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt launched on the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/zee5\/\" id=\"auto-tag_zee5\" data-tag=\"zee5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zee5<\/a> streaming service on July 3. It was taken down two days later. Zee5 issued a statement on social media that said: \u201cIn light of current developments, Satluj will be unavailable in India until further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tZee5 did not elaborate on the \u201ccurrent developments\u201d it alluded to, but added that it stood by the movie and is \u201ccommitted to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn an Instagram post, Zee5 added: \u201cSatluj may have paused. But the conversation it started hasn\u2019t. Thank you for the incredible love. We hope to bring it back soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe movie follows Khalra\u2019s campaign to uncover the unlawful killings and disappearances of thousands of Sikhs by Punjab police between 1984 and 1994. Khalra disappeared in September 1995. Six Punjab police officers were convicted of his abduction and murder a decade later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSatluj was produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/ronnie-screwvala\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ronnie-screwvala\" data-tag=\"ronnie-screwvala\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ronnie Screwvala<\/a>\u2019s RSVP Movies and MacGuffin Pictures, the banner founded by Trehan and Abhishek Chaubey. The film was originally called Ghallughara, a Punjabi word that refers to historic massacres of the Sikh people. It was then called Punjab \u201995, before finally getting its short-lived release with the title Satluj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAhead of release, it was in the news amid struggles to get certification. Trehan told Deadline that after it was submitted in late 2022, India\u2019s Central Board of Film Classification demanded numerous cuts and for the film\u2019s original name to be changed. The filmmakers pushed back, meaning long delays to the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe team behind the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/08\/tiff-punjab-95-pulled-1235461004\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/08\/tiff-punjab-95-pulled-1235461004\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled it from<\/a> the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of a planned world premiere in 2023. In 2025 it still had not been given a certificate. At a private screening at Cannes that year, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/diljit-dosanjh-honey-trehan-punjab-95-censorship-1236421585\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trehan told Deadline<\/a>: \u201cThere\u2019s pressure on my producers to write off the film, coming from government officials, from central government officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTrehan\u2019s reaction to Satluj getting pulled was reported in The Indian Express: \u201cI got to know about the removal of Satluj from ZEE5 in India at around 8:15 pm on Sunday. I am at a loss right now.
