(Supplied: NT Police Force)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, an NT Police Force spokesperson said officers had received reports around 8:15pm Sunday that a man had fled custody while being escorted from an ambulance into the emergency department of Royal Darwin Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;At the time, the man was handcuffed and wearing only a pair of shorts and socks,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He was last seen running on foot along Rocklands Road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Police alleged Mr Thompson was a &#8220;known associate of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Police are continuing to search for Mr Thompson, with the Fugitive Taskforce, Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations Unit involved in the search effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sergeant Kenneth Bradshaw said police were urging the man to hand himself in and asked the public to contact police if they saw him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re asking members of the public not to approach him. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NT court listings reveal Mr Thompson was due to appear in the Darwin Local Court this morning for a directions hearing on drugs and weapons charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Previous court records show Mr Thompson has a criminal history dating back to 2018, and has previously appeared in<strong> <\/strong>court on charges including aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, drug possession and trespassing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was also charged in 2020 for escaping lawful confinement, a charge he was convicted of after pleading guilty.<\/p>\n<p>A month of Mongol escapes<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Thompson&#8217;s escape from custody on Sunday is the latest in a recent string of escapes by associates and members of the Mongols bikie gang in the NT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Two weeks ago, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-24\/second-mongols-bikie-escapes-from-nt-custody-within-a-month\/106836298\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106836298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">police reported a 31-year-old alleged &#8220;known association of the Mongols&#8221;<\/a> escaped custody while under the supervision of corrections at Royal Darwin Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His escape, however, only lasted eight minutes before he was caught and re-arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier in June, patched member of the Mongols, Brandt Graham, 44, fled the dock in the Darwin Local Court, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-09\/bikie-brandt-graham-arrested-in-gunn-after-custody-escape\/106776612\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106776612\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">triggering a five-day city-wide manhunt<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Graham was eventually arrested by members of the police dog squad.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The exterior of the Darwin Local Court showing the sign on the side of the building. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/aab41c7a4547d56ffa5b35cee7603b97.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brandt Graham fled Darwin Local Court last month. (ABC News: Pete Garnish)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Macquarie University criminologist Vincent Hurley said this many alleged escapes &#8220;in such a short period of time, is of major concern&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Especially given that the Mongols \u2026 would have associates or affiliations with other outlaw motorcycle gangs,&#8221; Dr Hurley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, once they escape from custody, then they can easily be transferred between safe houses and homes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Exploiting &#8216;weaknesses&#8217; in the system<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Hurley said some attempts to flee custody could be &#8220;opportunistic&#8221; while others &#8220;can be pre-planned, to the point that they would know the weakness in the system&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Noting all three alleged Mongols-linked escapes in the NT this month &#8220;happened outside a correctional facility&#8221;, he said public spaces may also have &#8220;more distractions&#8221; and &#8220;more people around&#8221; than within the rigid structure of a jail.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The [allegation] that there&#8217;s been three would indicate that the inmates know that there is a weakness there to be exploited,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Dr Hurley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It could be that the person [in custody] has put on a fake illness, which is really common, so corrective services are obliged to take them to hospital.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with glasses looks at the camera inside an office, a blue and white police logo can be seen in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d9286b21a8511bad6e340cf86796bc57.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Vincent Hurley is a former police officer who now works as a criminology researcher.
