Three New York City residents tragically died during last week\u2019s extreme heat wave, City Hall said Monday.<\/p>\n
The trio died in their homes over the weekend, when temperatures soared to near-triple digits, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s rep, Joe Calvello.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur hearts are with their families and loved ones,\u201d Calvello said in a statement. <\/p>\n
The names of the deceased were not immediately made available.<\/p>\n
At least 22 suspected heat-related deaths were reported in New Jersey, too, as part of a national death toll that surpassed two dozen, according to The Guardian.<\/a><\/p>\n The heartbreaking news comes after the Big Apple reported 21 deaths as a direct result of heat in 2025, 19 of which resulted from exposure to a four-day heat wave last June.<\/p>\n That figure marked the highest number of heat-related deaths in the city in at least a decade and the only time the toll reached double digits.<\/p>\n Some New Yorkers relied on age-old street remedies for the heat. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n More than 50% of New Yorkers who have died in their homes from the heat since 2016 had no air conditioning, according to city Health Department data. The remaining had AC, but it wasn\u2019t working or in use.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople who died from heat stress were most frequently exposed to heat in homes,\u201d the city\u2019s report said.<\/p>\n \u201cHeat-exacerbated deaths were also more likely to occur at home, underscoring the importance of access to cooling at home,\u201d the report noted.<\/p>\n Calvello said the report shows \u201cwhy our administration undertook a massive, whole-of-government approach to respond to the extreme heat emergency: opening hundreds of cooling centers across the five boroughs, extending hours at outdoor pools, and expanding outreach to older adults, homeless New Yorkers, and others most at risk.<\/p>\n \u201cThis heat wave has passed, but the summer is far from over,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will remain vigilant and continue to protect New Yorkers from the growing threat of extreme heat and other severe weather.\u201d<\/p>\n The heat-wave-related deaths come just months after 19 New Yorkers died during this winter\u2019s bitter deep freeze<\/a>, with at least 15 of those fatalities directly related to hypothermia<\/a>, according to the city medical examiner\u2019s office.<\/p>\n Half of the New Yorkers who have died from the heat since 2016 either didn\u2019t have AC or weren\u2019t using it at the time.<\/p>\n Seven of the deceased died in their homes, the New York Times reported.<\/a><\/p>\n
