REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2026\/06\/california-health-tax-medi-cal-premiums\/?_gl=1*353slk*_ga*Mjg1OTU3MTk3LjE3Njk4MTA1MDQ.*_ga_5TKXNLE5NK*czE3ODMzNjQyOTMkbzE2JGcxJHQxNzgzMzY3MjkzJGo1OCRsMCRoMA..*_ga_DX0K9PCWYH*czE3ODMzNjQyOTMkbzE2JGcxJHQxNzgzMzY3MjkxJGo2MCRsMCRoMA..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">managed care organization tax,<\/a> signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last week, is intended to raise funding for state Medicaid programs but could raise annual premiums by $400 or more for a family of four, industry groups have warned. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNewsom and Sacramento Democrats blew billions, can\u2019t balance a budget, and now they want working families to pay the price with another $425 in higher healthcare costs,\u201d Assemblymember Carl DeMaio said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The tax proposal would require health insurers to pay a monthly rate of $8.85 per enrollee \u2014 which amounts to more than $100 per year annually for every individual on the health plan, if companies pass all the costs onto consumers, per <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2026\/06\/california-health-tax-medi-cal-premiums\/?_gl=1*353slk*_ga*Mjg1OTU3MTk3LjE3Njk4MTA1MDQ.*_ga_5TKXNLE5NK*czE3ODMzNjQyOTMkbzE2JGcxJHQxNzgzMzY3MjkzJGo1OCRsMCRoMA..*_ga_DX0K9PCWYH*czE3ODMzNjQyOTMkbzE2JGcxJHQxNzgzMzY3MjkxJGo2MCRsMCRoMA..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CalMatters<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<p>The Legislative Analyst\u2019s Office estimated that Californians could face a 1.5% increase in monthly premiums \u2014 on top of typical annual rate increases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember Carl DeMaio asked the Trump admin to deny approval for the tax. Akilah Weber Pierson, a Dem from San Diego, called the tax plan \u201cextremely problematic\u201d at a hearing last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capradio.org\/articles\/2026\/06\/22\/california-is-getting-ready-to-increase-a-health-insurance-tax-will-it-affect-your-premium\/#:~:text=Some%20legislators%20continued,measure%20on%20Thursday.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CapRadio reported.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaising health insurance premiums to help balance the state budget is simply robbing Peter to pay Paul,\u201d added Dr. Ren\u00e9 Bravo, president of the California Medical Association. <\/p>\n<p>Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.  Nathan Posner\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The proposed tax hike requires the approval of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Republicans said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Administration cannot prejudge an application until it\u2019s thoroughly reviewed, but Gavin Newsom proudly pushing a plan that could jack up insurance premiums is on par for California Democrats,\u201d said  Kush Desai, a White House spokesperson. <\/p>\n<p>A l<a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/98b5dbaba95f9c1b87e48a252\/files\/249fe7ab-0a94-5c55-5d1c-76a98ab28961\/Request_for_Rejection_of_MCO_Tax.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">etter signed <\/a>by DeMaio, Assembly Republican Leader Heath Flora and a coalition of other Republican legislators statewide claimed that approving the tax would \u201creward\u201d California for failing to properly manage its federal health care resources. <\/p>\n<p>A letter signed by Assembly Republicans claimed the tax would \u201creward\u201d poor governance.
