Chase Elliott<\/a> may be leading the NASCAR Cup Series\u00a0standings\u00a0\u00a0but not everyone is impressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

NASCAR analyst and former driver Kyle Petty has publicly questioned Elliott\u2019s rise to the\u00a0top. He\u00a0called it\u00a0\u201cmediocre consistency\u201d not\u00a0standout performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Elliott\u00a0\u00a0who has 12 top 10s in 21 races this\u00a0season\u00a0\u00a0quietly moved to the top of the standings after last Sunday\u2019s race at Dover. He spun twice while leading but still finished\u00a06th.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Hendricks Motorsports driver has been top 20 in every race this\u00a0season\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0kept him in the conversation even without frequent trips to victory lane.\u00a0But\u00a0\u00a0for\u00a0Kyle Petty that\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0not enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking on PRN\u2019s Fast\u00a0Talk<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Petty\u00a0said \u201cHe\u2019s been incredibly consistent. Mostly mediocre consistent, which has led him to lead the championship. He\u2019s just\u00a0there, he\u2019s vanilla\u2026\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s not done anything special to lead the points.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Petty Want More Than Consistency\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kyle Petty went on to compare Chase Elliott to more aggressive drivers. \u201cWhen you look at Denny with four wins, when you look at at Shane with three wins, when you look at these other guys who have led races and gone out in a blaze of glory and all this stuff. Chase is just that guy. It\u2019s the tortoise and the hare. It\u2019s the tortoise and the hare.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He later\u00a0said \u201cTop\u00a0\u00a020 is not a stat,\u00a0dude\u2026\u00a0\u00a0Top 10, top 5, wins. That\u2019s what we go after.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Petty said Chase Elliott\u2019s consistency has been enough to keep him near the\u00a0front\u00a0but it\u2019s not the same as drivers who dominate races. <\/p>\n

Even Kyle Larson<\/a> said he was surprised to see Elliott\u00a0second\u00a0\u00a0in the standings after his Atlanta win earlier this month. Elliott has since passed teammate William\u00a0Byron\u00a0\u00a0who led the series most of the\u00a0year\u00a0\u00a0and now leads by 16 points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Next up for Chase Elliott is the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor\u00a0Speedway\u00a0\u00a0a track where\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0never had a top 5. While Larson won there in\u00a02024\u00a0\u00a0Elliott has yet to make an impact at the crown jewel event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the regular season winding down\u00a0 the race may be the opportunity for the points leader to silence his critics with a big result.<\/p>\n
