{"id":91931,"date":"2025-07-25T17:28:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T17:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/91931\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T17:28:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T17:28:24","slug":"hundreds-of-job-cuts-loom-with-skydance-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/91931\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of Job Cuts Loom With Skydance Merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmployees of <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paramount-global\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paramount-global\" data-tag=\"paramount-global\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paramount Global<\/a> have been through the wringer over the last year and a half. And the uncertainty hanging over their heads is far from over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter M&amp;A talks with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/skydance-media\/\" id=\"auto-tag_skydance-media\" data-tag=\"skydance-media\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Skydance Media<\/a> that started in late 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/paramount-failed-merger-talks-1236040673\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whipped back and forth<\/a>, the parties in July 2024 announced they had reached a deal to merge. Then Paramount endured another year of waiting before <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fcc-approves-paramount-skydance-merger-deal-conditions-1236459974\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the FCC finally cleared the deal on Thursday<\/a>. It was, to say the least, a politically fraught process. Critics accused <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/opinion\/elizabeth-warren-stephen-colbert-late-show-coincidence-1236468152\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the media conglomerate of having \u201cbribed\u201d President Trump with a $16 million payment<\/a> to settle what experts deemed a meritless lawsuit targeting \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS\u2019s cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert,\u201d<\/a> announced a week before the FCC OK\u2019d the Skydance transaction, appeared to many to be another concession to Trump (who said <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/trump-absolutely-love-stephen-colbert-fired-jimmy-kimmel-next-1236464640\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired,\u201d<\/a> prompting <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/stephen-colbert-trump-go-f-yourself-cbs-late-show-cancelled-1236466001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an f-bomb riposte<\/a> from the late-night host); CBS has maintained it was \u201cpurely a financial decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTo meet the FCC\u2019s approval, Skydance said it would ensure diversity, equity and inclusion programs are dead at Paramount and that DEI would not return to the newly merged company. Furthermore, it agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/skydance-promises-fcc-eliminate-dei-paramount-cbs-news-ombudsman-1236467977\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">install an ombudsman at CBS to vet and act on \u201cbias\u201d complaints<\/a> in its news and entertainment programming \u2014 a pledge that Anna Gomez, the FCC\u2019s single Democrat commissioner, said represented the Trump administration \u201cimposing never-before-seen controls over newsroom decisions and editorial judgment, in direct violation of the First Amendment and the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThrough all of this, Paramount, parent of CBS, Paramount Pictures, Paramount+ and Pluto TV, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and BET, has undertaken several rounds of layoffs \u2014 and there are certain to be more job cuts coming when Skydance officially takes control of the company, expected within the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs of Friday morning, neither Paramount nor Skydance had publicly commented on next steps in their merger, including when it\u2019s expected to close or details about restructuring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a July 2024 presentation to investors after the Skydance deal with Paramount and Shari Redstone\u2019s National Amusements Inc. was announced, Jeff Shell (the former NBCU CEO who is set to become president of \u201cParamount Skydance Corp.\u201d) said the Skydance team working with consulting firm Bain &amp; Co. had <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/skydance-2-billion-cuts-paramount-merger-1236062244\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">identified at least $2 billion in potential annualized cost savings<\/a> at the combined company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShell indicated much of those cost cuts will come from its linear TV business: \u201cWe know that linear is challenged and declining. We like these businesses, particularly CBS. We think it is a very, very, very strong business with more reach than any other business\u2026 However, I think a lot of us in the business know, we got to run these businesses in a different way as they decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhere will those cost savings come from? Shell didn\u2019t explicitly say so, but it\u2019s obvious that major layoffs would be needed to get to a $2 billion annualized number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPrior to Shell\u2019s comments, the trio of co-CEOs running Paramount \u2014 George Cheeks, Brian Robbins and Chris McCarthy \u2014 announced a plan to slash $500 million in annual costs. Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/cbs-george-cheeks-paramount-trump-lawsuit-settlement-core-objectives-1236446002\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they said they achieved that<\/a>. That was largely through <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/paramount-global-layoffs-phase-two-1236154272\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">layoffs and restructuring<\/a>\u00a0that cut 15% of its U.S. headcount, affecting about 2,000 employees through cutbacks last summer and fall. Last month, the company cut another 3.5% of its domestic staff, representing several hundred more pink-slips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs of Dec. 31, 2024, according to Paramount\u2019s most recent 10-K, the company had about 18,600 full- and part-time employees in 32 countries worldwide (so the headcount is lower today). Two years earlier, Paramount\u2019s headcount was 24,500. Meanwhile, Skydance says on its <a href=\"https:\/\/skydance.com\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> that it has \u201cmore than 500\u201d employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEven if, for the sake of argument, you subtracted the $500 million in cost cuts claimed by Paramount\u2019s co-CEOs from Shell\u2019s $2 billion figure, that still indicates a very large number of layoffs that could be coming under the new regime. The cuts could number in the hundreds and some Paramount employees expect it to run into the thousands, sources say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLeadership changes at Paramount are already underway: Chris McCarthy, head of Showtime &amp; MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, is <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/paramount-global-chris-mccarthy-mtv-exits-fcc-skydance-approval-1236469632\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set to leave the company following the Skydance merger close<\/a>. Paramount Pictures chief Brian Robbins is expected to exit as well, while CBS CEO George Cheeks is expected to stay on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUpon the deal\u2019s closing, Skydance and its financial partners are set inject $1.5 billion in cash into Paramount. However, that\u2019s intended to go toward reducing Paramount\u2019s long-term debt ($14.16 billion as of Q1 of 2025) to help stabilize its balance sheet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNow that the long, drawn-out sale process is finally nearing its end, Skydance leadership is poised to take control,\u201d MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman wrote in a research note Thursday. \u201cWith that, the real work begins \u2014 rebuilding Paramount, addressing the critical strategic questions ahead, and charting a path toward a more sustainable and competitive future.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Employees of Paramount Global have been through the wringer over the last year and a half.
