(Photo: Tim de Waele\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>A sizable crash split the bunch at 5.4km to go of Wednesday\u2019s stage, leaving a gang of Uno-X Mobility to power the reduced front group into the city-center finish in Pau.<\/p>\n<p>All the sprint heavyweights were there for the final kick \u2013 Merlier, Jasper Philipsen, Biniam Girmay, and Mads Pedersen.<\/p>\n<p>But the underdog won out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just managed to find my way. I was there on my own in the end, and I found the right wheel,\u201d Kooij said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to have the chance to sprint today. When I saw the line, I just went as hard as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yellow jersey\u00a0<a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/torstein-traeen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Torstein Tr\u00e6en<\/a> (Uno X Mobility) was caught up in the crash and came to the line with a banged-up bike and looking scuffed.<\/p>\n<p>GC favorites <a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/tadej-pogacar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a> (UAE Emirates-XRG) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) were also caught behind the split. At 158km in distance and with only a few molehill climbs, the stage into Pau was a recovery ride for all but the bunch sprinters.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to say who had it worse on Wednesday\u2019s slow-burner: Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto-Intermarch\u00e9), or the pundits commentating on the stage for the TV feeds.<\/p>\n<p>Veistroffer attacked at the flag drop, likely expecting companions to come along for the ride.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody was interested.<\/p>\n<p>The Belgian racer plowed a lonely furrow through the plains of the Hautes-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es while Alpecin-Premier Tech half-heartedly chased behind.<\/p>\n<p>TV commentators were forced to get creative in finding ways to fill the time with chat about castles, cheese, and the peloton\u2019s latest cooling hack.<\/p>\n<p>Veistroffer was finally caught at around 15km to go \u2013 more than 140km and three-and-a-quarter hours after he attacked.<\/p>\n<p>The Tourmalet towers over stage 6<\/p>\n<p>The Tour de France switches gears again on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 6 marks the first high-mountain stage of the race and features two of the most legendary climbs of Tour de France history.
