Not the pristine, fresh pine-forest air you were hoping for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">\u201cIt\u2019s not really better or worse up here than the Twin Cities right now,\u201d said John Fredrikson, co-owner of Cook County\u2019s historic Gunflint Lodge, which overlooks Canada from the south side of Gunflint Lake. Fredrikson reported a \u201clittle bit of haze\u201d over Gunflint on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">It\u2019s probably too late to cancel your accommodations. What can you do? Should you still go? And if you do, how can you prepare?<\/p>\n<p>Assess the current situation by looking up the AQI for where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a reliable indicator, with a six-part scale that ranges from \u201cGood\u201d to \u201cModerate\u201d to \u201cUnhealthy for sensitive groups\u201d (such as asthma sufferers), on up to \u201cUnhealthy,\u201d \u201cVery Unhealthy\u201d and  \u201cHazardous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency maintains a map of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pca.state.mn.us\/air-water-land-climate\/current-air-quality-conditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pca.state.mn.us\/air-water-land-climate\/current-air-quality-conditions\">current air quality conditions<\/a> based on fine particulates (what we\u2019re experiencing now) and ozone, including readings at dedicated test sites throughout the state. Local readings can vary wildly even within a region, but you can get a good idea of how bad the air the may be where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">Google has a very handy, color-coded AQI map (simply search \u201cAQI Minnesota\u201d) that gives a quick live look at where it\u2019s bad, somewhat bad, and just OK. As of Friday morning, the Twin Cities metro area and nearby western Wisconsin were ruby red (for \u201cUnhealthy\u201d), while a central swath from St. Cloud to Brainerd was orange (\u201cUnhealthy for Sensitive Groups\u201d). The Duluth-Superior area had a split personality this morning, with a refreshing green color (\u201cGood\u201d) in the Spirit Mountain recreation area, but red\/Unhealthy over on the Wisconsin side of the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">But the overall AQI takeaway for travelers today was pretty clear: Just get out of the metro area, for starters.<\/p>\n<p>Consult air quality forecasts to find a last-minute destination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">The MPCA, again, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pca.state.mn.us\/air-water-land-climate\/air-quality-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pca.state.mn.us\/air-water-land-climate\/air-quality-forecast\">three-day forecast maps<\/a> showing the conditions today, Saturday and Sunday. The current air-quality alert is set to expire at 11 p.m. today, and conditions for the rest of the weekend are \u201cModerate\u201d or better in most of the state.
