Authorities in La Crosse say there likely wasn’t foul play in the death of college student Eliotte Heinz, but that the investigation into how she died remains open.<\/p>\n

The La Crosse Police Department said in a statement on July 25<\/a> it continues to follow up on information surrounding Heinz’s death, but that it doesn’t believe there was any criminal conduct involved, based on results of a preliminary autopsy.<\/p>\n

Final autopsy results will not be completed for several months, the department’s statement said.<\/p>\n

Heinz, 22, had been missing since July 20 in La Crosse. Her body was found three days later<\/a> in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota, according to a news release.<\/p>\n

Before her body was discovered, authorities and residents scoured the region for days, searching for the Viterbo University graduate student from Hortonville, a village in the Fox Valley.<\/p>\n

“The outpouring of support in the search for Eliotte has been overwhelming, and we are deeply grateful for the kindness, prayers, and encouragement from the community and beyond,” the family said in a statement<\/a> released by the university on July 22.<\/p>\n
