{"id":922878,"date":"2026-07-09T09:37:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T09:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/922878\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T09:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T09:37:15","slug":"angus-taylor-says-one-nation-policies-would-bring-eternity-of-pain-to-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/922878\/","title":{"rendered":"Angus Taylor says One Nation policies would bring &#8216;eternity of pain&#8217; to economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition leader Angus Taylor says One Nation&#8217;s economic plan for the country would &#8220;send us broke&#8221; and has accused the right-wing party of being a &#8220;column of smoke&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a speech at the Sydney Institute on Thursday, Mr Taylor said four of One Nation&#8217;s policies alone would cost a trillion dollars over a decade and rubbished the party for having &#8220;no credible plan&#8221; to pay for its promises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The comments are his strongest yet pushing back on One Nation, with the opposition leader previously suggesting his door was open to leader Pauline Hanson to work with the Coalition on issues like opposing Labor&#8217;s tax agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Taylor outlined <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-14\/angus-taylor-ties-migration-cap-to-housing-budget-reply\/106676622\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106676622\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his own economic vision for Australia<\/a>, while warning an &#8220;eternity of pain&#8221; would follow if party leader Pauline Hanson gained power.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-29\/angus-taylor-coalition-liberals-leadership-one-nation\/106852176\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turning point for Liberals on One Nation<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">While Angus Taylor grapples with the Coalition&#8217;s dilemma of how to keep the centre while diverting voters away from Pauline Hanson&#8217;s party, Andrew Hastie has been talking tough on One Nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If unfunded, these promises would generate a surge in inflation requiring the RBA to raise interest rates by around 3 percentage points to neutralise their effect,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That would add around $20,000 a year in interest to the average new mortgage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said national debt, which is currently sitting at almost $1 trillion, would nearly triple under One Nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The One Nation policies included in the modelling include increasing defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, introducing income splitting for families, indexing income tax brackets to inflation, and net zero migration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a red, with red hair, standing in a corridor in front of TV cameras.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1783589835_565_c32130af2a4f82a9ab1ed4daaac2aa5f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The opposition leader has warned against Pauline Hanson&#8217;s economic strategy. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Taylor described Senator Hanson as a &#8220;one person show&#8221; and said her policies were a &#8220;random grab bag&#8221; of &#8220;changing positions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I understand why some Australians think the way out is to blow the place up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But to those who feel like lighting a match, believe me when I say, that a moment of satisfaction isn&#8217;t worth the eternity of pain that will follow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>One Nation test for Liberals looms<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Taylor&#8217;s fiery speech comes after increasing comparisons between his generally more careful approach to the resurgent minor party, which has consistently polled ahead of the Coalition since the start of the year, and the more direct attacks of his Liberal colleagues like frontbencher Andrew Hastie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hastie last month declared he was at &#8220;war&#8221; many believe the contest will come down to a two-party preferred race with One Nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A Labor source told the ABC they expected their party to prevail and believed candidate selection would be a &#8220;significant factor&#8221; in how Ms Hanson&#8217;s party performed.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor accuses Labor of &#8216;anti-productivity&#8217; agenda<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Taylor said Labor&#8217;s changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax would be their downfall, and said the May budget revealed the government did not &#8220;understand the Australian people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why the Australian people are resisting it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition has <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-15\/coalition-to-repeal-labor-property-tax-changes\/106681866\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106681866\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vowed to reverse the tax changes<\/a>, as well as significantly reduce government spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Taylor said it was time to &#8220;take away the cookie jar,&#8221; promising a crackdown in four areas including the National Reconstruction Fund and the so-called climate bureaucracy like the EV tax rebate and the Net Zero Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He accused Labor of having a big government agenda and said it was dragging down living standards and shredding wages for workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Coalition will restore self-determination and enterprise as the drivers of growth,&#8221;
