We have seen similar instances across Texas, and not just with Mexican nationals.<\/p>\n“Just the other month Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a center in Houston that was allegedly involved in birth tourism for Chinese nationals,” he says.<\/p>\n
China has been one of the biggest culprits of the widespread problem. They have abused birthright citizenship to gain an entry point for potential espionage in the United States. It is not just an immigration problem; it is a national security threat.<\/p>\n
“We have maybe a million or more people in China with American citizenship because of programs like this,” says Waltens.<\/p>\n
The Governor has directed the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to immiedately refer any violations to the attorney general for enforcement, and to appropriate local authorities for criminal prosecution. He has also insturcted them to pursue administrative sanctions and penalties against the hospital in south Texas if violations are discovered.<\/p>\n
It is known this is a widespread problem, and Texas is trying to combat it. But Abbott can only do so much before the state legislature needs to step to the plate.<\/p>\n
“This is something Republicans should prioritize in the upcoming session, especially after the Supreme Court ruling,” Waltens says.<\/p>\n
State Representative Brian Harrison has called for a special session on the issue as well, which might be a long shot.
