Though she only appeared in one season of The <\/a>Andy Griffith<\/a> Show<\/a>, many fans of the series still treasure Elinor Donahue<\/a>\u2018s performance as Ellie Walker, the pharmacist who won Sheriff Andy Taylor\u2019s heart for a time. In a new interview with Woman\u2019s World<\/a>, Donahue, now 88, reveals why her tenure on the show was so brief \u2014 and weighs on on rumors of bad blood between herself and Griffith.<\/p>\n To Donahue, making the transition from child actor on Father Knows Best<\/a> to adult love interest on Andy Griffith was difficult: \u201cTo be honest, I felt like a bird out of a nest,\u201d the actress revealed. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel like I had all my feathers yet and I didn\u2019t feel capable. It was the strangest feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n Though rumors have long suggested that Griffith had Donahue fired due to their lack of chemistry, she confirmed that it was she who decided to leave the series: \u201cI had a three-year contract for that show, but at the end of the first year, I asked to be let out of my contract, because I didn\u2019t feel that I was playing the role properly. I just didn\u2019t feel right about it. In retrospect, and from things that people have said to me\u2014very lovely things\u2014I was doing okay. I was just not a happy camper and there was no point in my trying to continue with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n As for Griffith\u2019s role in her exit, Donahue says that after she left, \u201cI saw him at a party and I went up to him and he was very gracious to me. His manager, Dick Lank, was with him. He said, \u2018We just didn\u2019t know how to write for you.\u2019 That could be part of it, but I didn\u2019t think there was any real chemistry there and, fortunately, they would sporadically try other women. When Aneta Corsaut<\/a> came in, I have since read they had a hot and heavy thing going. He was\u00a0able to relate to her.\u201d<\/p>\n Donohue\u2019s memories of the series weren\u2019t just about feeling like a mismatch; she also shared a sweet recollection of working with Griffith on the show\u2019s Christmas episode. \u201cI was very nervous about singing, I didn\u2019t sing anymore and I avoided it like the plague,\u201d recalled Donohue. \u201cThey wanted me to sing \u2018Away in a Manger\u2019 with Andy [on the Christmas episode]. I tried to get out of it.
