Far fewer wind up immortalized by one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s what happened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/2015\/03\/18\/five-unforgettable-shows-from-the-kessler-theaters-first-five-years\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Liles<\/a>, whose likeness is now cast in bronze, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/article\/edie-brickell-world-famous-pets-austin-city-limits-22296842.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edie Brickell<\/a>, his longtime friend. The Oak Cliff-born singer commissioned a bust of a serious-looking Liles, resplendent in trademark dreadlocks, that was installed recently next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/2025\/06\/06\/kessler-theater-paying-tribute-to-this-legendary-dallas-music-club\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Kessler Theater<\/a>, the O.C. music hall where he\u2019s artistic director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonoring Jeff Liles and his heart full of dreams for the Dallas music scene,\u201d reads the plaque in front of the head-and-shoulders sculpture. Liles was one of the scruffy impresarios who gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/movies\/article\/billy-bob-thornton-mark-cuban-deep-ellum-film-22216052.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brickell &amp; New Bohemians<\/a> their early Dallas gigs in the mid-\u201980s, booking them into the Theatre Gallery, Prophet Bar and Club Dada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeff was a kid when we were kids playing in Deep Ellum. He treated us all as well as any nationally known touring band,\u201d Brickell said Wednesday from Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, where she was about to perform with her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/2025\/05\/08\/review-paul-simon-defies-expectations-at-dallas-show\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Simon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd all through the years, he&#8217;s invited us to return and play at the Kessler. Now that it\u2019s done, he calls it \u201can incredible honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he also admits the whole thing is a bit surreal. \u201cI hope people don\u2019t think that I passed away or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a personal level, Edie has always been like my guardian angel,\u201d Liles said. \u201cI won\u2019t get into specifics, but she has either directly or indirectly saved my life more than once. She really has a sixth sense when it comes to that kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Artist Louie Zakarian, longtime head of the\u00a0SNL makeup department, sculpted Liles\u2019 likeness, which was cast in bronze by Pyrology Foundry in Bastrop. Kessler Theater owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/article\/dallas-longhorn-backyard-amphitheater-22187990.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin Cabaniss<\/a> donated the courtyard space, while Heather Ezell, Brickell\u2019s friend, designed a fountain next to the bust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince everybody loves a fountain, I wanted to make a fountain with a sculpture of Jeff,\u201d Brickell said. \u201cAlso it makes the birds happy, so you&#8217;ll always hear singing around him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"The plaque in front of the bust of Jeff\u00a0Liles outside the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:1 \/ 1\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The plaque in front of the bust of Jeff\u00a0Liles outside the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff.<\/p>\n<p>Heather Ezell<\/p>\n<p>Liles has worn many hats over the years \u2014 writer, DJ, music-history raconteur and leader of the experimental hip-hop\/electronic group Decadent Dub Team. But he\u2019s always circled back to concert promotion. Today, he\u2019s part of the team behind both the Kessler and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/2023\/03\/30\/longhorn-ballroom-reopens-with-asleep-at-the-wheel\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the reborn Longhorn Ballroom<\/a> \u2014 a role where he continues to champion local, Texas and national acts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy life didn\u2019t have much meaning until the day I stepped inside the Theatre Gallery for the first time in 1985,\u201d he said. \u201cBut thanks to people like Edie and Edwin and Russell Hobbs, who gave me my first booking job, I feel lucky to have found a real sense of purpose in this community. What a privilege it\u2019s been to help bring so much joy to so many people through the magic of live music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A fall dedication is planned, but visitors can see Liles\u2019 mini-me now, next to the\u00a0Kessler Theater at 1230 W.
