People from the boot got the boot!<\/p>\n

The City Council\u2019s Italian Caucus demanded Mayor Zohran Mamdani amend his new immigrant enclaves map<\/a> \u2014 which ignored Little Italy and other Italian-American areas of the five boroughs.<\/p>\n

The caucus fumed Thursday over Mamdani\u2019s map which didn\u2019t list Italian enclaves \u2014 or big Irish and Jewish neighborhoods \u2014 but spotlighted 30 other areas, including Little Palestine, Koreatown, Little Pakistan and Little Odessa.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot tell the story of immigrant New York while airbrushing out one of the city\u2019s most recognizable and historically significant immigrant communities,\u201d the caucus said in a statement Thursday, calling the omission \u201cincomplete at best and insulting at worst.\u201d<\/p>\n

The caucus said the Mamdani administration should work with historians and community groups so the next version of the map gives Italian\u2011Americans a fair shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cItalian\u2011Americans are not a footnote in the history of New York,\u201d the group added. \u201cWe are one of the city\u2019s foundational immigrant communities, and our neighborhoods, churches, small businesses, feast traditions, civic institutions, and family networks helped build modern New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

A City Hall spokesperson said Wednesday that the map was designed to \u201chighlight neighborhoods in New York City that have substantial foreign\u2011born populations from regions and countries around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Italian Caucus pointed out Belmont in the Bronx, Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights in Brooklyn and Italian\u2011American pockets in Queens and Staten Island are also neighborhoods where Italian roots run deep.<\/p>\n

None were mentioned in the map.<\/p>\n
