Philly\u2019s new Path to Democracy<\/a> walking tour lets visitors and residents take a front seat in exploring the city\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The idea came as a way to connect residents and visitors to the historical sites around them, said Kyle Stein, a senior marketing project manager with Visit Philly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s well-documented that Philadelphia did not have anything that connected its various historic sites,\u201d he said. \u201cSo this has been something that\u2019s been on Visit Philadelphia\u2019s mind for a few years now, trying to create a through line to help connect the various sites.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The self-guided walking tour guides participants around Historic Philadelphia and stops at six spots. Stein explained the Visit Philly website page<\/a> will also reference 21 stops in the walking tour \u2013 but only six of the sites have the visual guide installations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each spot has a prototype installation and a QR code for people to scan \u2013 which will give more information about the history behind each spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts at Franklin Court, and when you make a right on Market, you\u2019re going to hit Printer\u2019s Row, which is a plaque commemorating all the printers that existed on Market Street,\u201d he said. \u201cThen, you\u2019ll see the Chief Tamanend statue that\u2019s right at the I-95 entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n

From there, he said walkers can go back up 2nd Street to Christ Church, then to the Betsy Ross House. The tour ends at Arch Street Meeting House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The path will also feature mosaic-inspired art installations at each stop.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted [the art] to be distinctly Philly,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted it to be something that Philadelphians can recognize and would get behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Showcasing democracy over time\u00a0<\/p>\n

The experience is modeled on Boston\u2019s Freedom Trail<\/a> \u2013 a walking path with a\u00a0 collection of historical sites that tell the story of \u201cthe American Revolution and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stein said Philly\u2019s trail will go further \u2013 focusing not just on the nation\u2019s founding, but how democracy continues to infiltrate the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Path to Democracy is really all of the sites that helped contribute to democracy as we know it today,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, all of these stops along the path that helped form democracy, they didn\u2019t just take place in 1776.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said future iterations of the path may include stops that relate to the Civil Rights Movement and the LGBTQ+ movement \u2013 tying in more modern examples of democracy forming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stein said a companion digital app will also allow for more storytelling as visitors move between historical sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a literal map, there\u2019s information about each site, there\u2019s tidbits about how close you are to the next site, information about whether it\u2019s open or closed and there\u2019s little factoids about the sites,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He emphasized the app will give information about the sites, but leaves some room to entice people inside to learn more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The temporary walking path is a precursor to a permanent Path to Democracy \u2013 which is scheduled to launch in late 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stein said this pilot program will help to provide feedback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that we\u2019d be remiss if we were to move forward with this project without getting the impact of the people who are representing it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s Philadelphia\u2019s path to democracy, so that survey is to get the feedback of the people that use it, and help influence the way that it\u2019s gonna look in the future.<\/p>\n

He adds he hopes the next path will expand to include even more sites \u2013 stretching to places like Washington Square Park, City Hall and Mother Bethel.\u00a0<\/p>\n
