Music Venues That Capture the City’s Creative Spirit

From Hollywood to Downtown L.A., music’s culture is alive and well if searched for in the right spaces

In the dawn of a socially digital age, many have taken to the very platforms that hinder their experience to complain about it doing so — the infinite paradox that has trapped a 21st-century Los Angeles.

While this is true of any certain place in today’s social ecosystem, many voice that the magic of creative spaces are under specific attack in the face of Artificial Intelligence and superficial friendships made in the name of networking. This also comes at a time with growing romanticisation of days when Sunset Strip was crawling with names that would soon decorate households and a vibrant social scene.

Across mediums, media like Almost Famous and Daisy Jones and the Six continuously perpetuate this restless FOMO left with today’s music enthusiasts caged by short-form content dictating that now can’t be like then. Although L.A. is littered with creative spaces, especially music venues, only a few cultivate the true timeless spirit of the music scene’s community.

Here are five music venues across L.A. that promise that cinematic, movie-like experience for those who see it through the flashing lights and thrashing crowds — in no specific order.

Taking first mention, this venue isn’t exactly a secret in the scene but is a great representative of it. The Smell, open since the late 1990s, is a space that fans refuse to let fade. Sitting on Main Street in Downtown L.A., the brick building is paired with an open parking lot and back alley entrance.

Allowing ins and outs, people linger in the alleyway outside of the doors between sets, with the bands playing often being in that crowd. The walk to the stage in this long and narrow space is lined with stickers and flyers showcasing other DIY projects, whether that’s bands, magazines, clothing brands or record stores.

Scroll to continue reading

The music acts vary, but the venue mostly hosts smaller bands in the alternative or hardcore scene. Overall, The Smell is a genuine staple in L.A.’s music scene and looks the part, coated in the community’s creativity through graffiti, promotion and a full mural closing in the stage.

One of the newer spaces on the list, the first few years of the shop’s lifespan have solidified it in the music scene. DIY shows, featuring mostly alternative or punk-adjacent bands on the come-up, are hosted in the Hollywood location’s basement behind the storefront.

Yet again, an alleyway funnels crowds to the stairs of the basement and offers itself up as a space for air in between sets. Because of its semi-cramped space above and below ground, connecting with like-minded others is an easy feat — with conversations happening in these spaces often leading to movie-like experiences people chase.

The crowded, sweaty, extremely loud environment is a staple of the culture surrounding the music industry, and Nivessa Record shows are visually representative of the best parts of that.

This venue is no hole-in-the-wall, but it is arguably the hub of the quintessential L.A. music scene experience. The Echo often cycles through hosting major bands of mass popularity back to bands in their infancy, which leads this space to be a very lively one.

The layout of this venue is the most unique on the list, with some shows being hosted on the main stage the door opens up to and the smaller, “patio” stage under string lights in the venue’s backyard.

The music club is the most representative of its neighborhood — Echo Park — having a full bar and photo booth while standing on a strip in line with a vintage clothing store, sweet treat and dinner spots. While this might not offer people the “underground” feel of the music scene, it glimmers in the city lights of the L.A. music industry.

This host lives up to its name, holding shows of every genre in a genuine studio. The crowd is very often on ground level with the band, breaking down the barrier between artist and fan as they stand face-to-face.

The visually bare-bones and spacious venue offers a space for events from DJ sets to photoshoots and back to DIY shows, so creative energy is heavy in the room. Bands’ sets have historically given way to a very social scene in Coyote Studios, with many of those in attendance there to celebrate the same thing regardless of that night’s event — creativity and music.

Following in suit with the formerly mentioned Echo, this venue is a well-known one for both young and mature bands. However, the renovated Spanish-style theatre has stood visually frozen in time from its opening in 1926. Located on Hollywood Boulevard, this is a space that offers the nostalgic feel often sought after through media consumption.

Though this isn’t necessarily a venue that prioritizes the cultivation of community, it does house memories of Hollywood music past. Aesthetically and energetically, it might be the last venue to keep the spirit of the iconism of the Sunset Strip alive and well without attempting to do so superficially.

From Hollywood to Downtown L.A., music’s culture is alive and well if searched for in the right spaces…

[5123
1582,276,36421,2961,11878,224,5337,295776,373477,373478
post-925689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-ca","tag-california","tag-echo-park","tag-la","tag-live-music","tag-los-angeles","tag-losangeles","tag-the-echo","tag-the-fonda-theatre","tag-the-smell
["GET
