{"id":925695,"date":"2026-07-10T14:50:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T14:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/925695\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T14:50:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T14:50:17","slug":"on-the-way-a-new-day-for-buses-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/925695\/","title":{"rendered":"On The Way: A new day for buses in NYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-base line-height-3\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani and MTA Chair Janno Lieber stood arm to arm, grinning ear to ear during a news conference in downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-base line-height-3\">Over the last year, the two have <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/days-before-nyc-mayoral-election-mta-chair-trashes-mamdanis-pitch-for-free-buses\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">publicly disagreed over Mamdani\u2019s campaign pledge to make buses free to ride<\/a>. But they share the goal of speeding up service, and came together to <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/nycs-buses-arent-free-but-they-would-speed-up-under-new-plan-by-mamdani-mta\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announce a new plan<\/a> to do just that along 50 corridors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-base line-height-3\">They declared it was a new day for collaboration between the city transportation department \u2014 which manages the streets and stoplights \u2014 and the state-run MTA, which operates public buses. Lieber noted that former Mayor Eric Adams largely <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/mayor-adams-gets-bronx-cheer-from-bus-riders-as-he-leaves-office\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">resisted measures to improve New York City\u2019s sluggish bus service<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-base line-height-3\">\u201cThe support at the local level in the prior City Hall was, shall we say, uncertain,\u201d said Lieber. \u201cNot the case anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-base line-height-3\">He called out the \u201coverdue commitment\u201d mandated by the city\u2019s 2019 \u201cstreets master plan\u201d law, which required the DOT to install 30 new miles of bus lanes every year.
