(File photo courtesy of the department)<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chulavistaca.gov\/departments\/police-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chula Vista Police Department<\/a> announced plans for a DUI and license checkpoint somewhere in the city limits on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Officers will be stopping drivers from 6 p.m. to midnight to check for alcohol or marijuana intoxication.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement agencies frequently announce checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink or smoke to excess and then get behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Checkpoint locations are determined based on data from past DUI-related crashes. <\/p>\n<p>Officer Brian Carter said the primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chula Vista Police officers at a checkpoint.
