The deal that sent Vincent Trocheck to the Mammoth<\/a> wouldn\u2019t have been possible last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trocheck, at that point, reportedly still had Utah on his no-trade list. <\/p>\n

But that changed by the time the Rangers sent their center to the Mammoth last week, bringing back a top-four defenseman in Sean Durzi and pieces for the future \u2014 top forward prospect Cole Beaudoin and a third-round pick in 2027 \u2014 as their retool in the present continues to take shape.<\/p>\n

Trocheck\u2019s 12-team no-trade list last year shifted to a 10-team list for this upcoming season, according to Spotrac. <\/p>\n

And when Trocheck became open to a Utah trade, a window opened for the Rangers to ship a piece engulfed by trade rumors since before the deadline to a team he felt had plenty of potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just going to a team that I think can win was the most important thing for me,\u201d Trocheck said Friday when asked about the no-trade clause change as he addressed reporters in Utah for the first time. \u201cBeen in the league a long time, and I haven\u2019t won anything, you know, so that\u2019s what\u2019s most important to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trocheck came close with the Rangers. <\/p>\n

He made it to the Eastern Conference final in 2024 while delivering a career season, collecting 25 goals and 77 points en route to making his second All-Star Game.<\/p>\n

He blossomed when skating alongside Artemi Panarin and became a critical piece of the Blueshirts\u2019 power play, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But then Trocheck went through the Rangers\u2019 struggles, missing the playoffs the last two years and landing on long-term injured reserve with an upper-body injury early in the 2025-26 campaign. <\/p>\n

As the deadline approached and president and general manager Chris Drury dropped The Letter 2.0<\/a>, Trocheck \u2014 given his value and what he could bring back in a return package \u2014 became a likely option to get moved.<\/p>\n

He even discussed that reality, and how it impacted the rest of his family, leading up to the deadline, sitting out a game due to roster management and bracing for the call that could end his Blueshirts stint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s not a secret,\u201d Trocheck said of West Coast teams in early March. \u201cThey are on my no-trade clause. Family is important to me and my family is on the East Coast.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then the Mammoth \u2014 and their emerging core \u2014 did enough to change his mind. In their second season as an expansion franchise, they cracked the postseason tournament before falling in the first round.<\/p>\n

Clayton Keller, who won a gold medal alongside Trocheck at the Winter Olympics in Milan<\/a>, erupted for a team-best 88 points. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Logan Cooley, whom Trocheck, a former Penguins player, has known since the Pittsburgh native was 12 years old, produced 24 goals. <\/p>\n

Trocheck and Cooley, who skate together in the summer, would \u201calways just kind of fantasize a little bit about what it would be like to play together.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously a lot of potential and been taking a lot of strides the last few years,\u201d Trocheck said. \u201cVery good, young team, and I think for me, one of the biggest things is just going to a team that has a chance to win.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cooley and Keller gave Trocheck two points of reference when vetting the organization, and when former Islanders captain Anders Lee signed a three-year deal with the Mammoth, Utah added two experienced veterans \u2014 at 32 and 36 years old, respectively \u2014 to complement up-and-coming players. <\/p>\n

Trocheck confirmed Friday that he would be open to skating on the wing, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It always seemed inevitable that Trocheck would get moved. <\/p>\n

The destination, for the longest time, just seemed a bit unlikely.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, our goal has always been the same,\u201d general manager Bill Armstrong said of Trocheck and Lee on Friday. \u201cIt\u2019s to compete for and ultimately win a Stanley Cup, and I feel with these two players beside me, to my left, that we\u2019re one step closer to doing that.
