Thousands of Con Edison customers on Staten Island lost power Friday as heat gripped the city and storms moved through the area.<\/p>\n
As of 6:20 p.m., more than 18,100 customers in the borough were without power, according to Con Edison\u2019s outage map.<\/p>\n
More than 1,500 customers in Brooklyn and more than 240 customers in Queens were also dealing with outages, the map showed.<\/p>\n
(A “customer” outage does not necessarily reflect one resident or household. For example, in some instances, a “customer” outage could reflect an entire residential building.)<\/p>\n
In a release, Con Edison said it reduced voltage by 8% on the east side of Staten Island \u201cto protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are made.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe affected area includes 64,900 customers and is bounded by the Kill Van Kull on the north, The Narrows on the east, Raritan Bay on the south, and Bard Avenue and Manor Road on the west,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n
The utility is urging residents in certain neighborhoods to temporarily avoid using energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers and microwaves, and to limit the use of air conditioning, as well as refrain from charging electric vehicles.<\/p>\n
The request to reduce energy use was made for the following neighborhoods: New Brighton, St. George, Tompkinsville, Brighton Heights, Ward Hill, Stapleton, Grymes Hill, Clifton, Silver Lake, Rosebank, Fort Wadsworth, Grasmere, Concord, Arrochar, South Beach, Ocean Breeze, Midland Beach, Grant City, New Dorp and Dongan Hills.<\/p>\n
Con Edison said it is in communication with New York City Emergency Management as it works to restore power.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said his office is \u201cactively monitoring the situation,\u201d adding that Con Edison \u201chas let us know that power will be restored as quickly and safely as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
“Over the last hour, our office has been in direct communication with representatives from Con Edison regarding the significant power outages caused by today’s storm,\u201d Fossella said. \u201cAt one point, more than 20,000 homes across Staten Island were without power, stretching from the eastern shore, from Fort Wadsworth to Bay Terrace, and up to Brielle.\u201d<\/p>\n
