Turks and Caicos Islands\u00a0regularly draw Americans with their white-sand beaches \u2014 but US officials are renewing safety warnings for travelers.<\/p>\n
The US State Department on Tuesday updated its Level 2 \u201cExercise Increased Caution\u201d advisory for the British Overseas Territory.<\/p>\n
The islands are best known for their turquoise waters, coral reefs and luxury resorts, while Grand Turk serves as a popular Caribbean cruise port.<\/p>\n
The advisory notes that Providenciales, the Turks and Caicos Islands\u2019\u00a0main tourist destination\u00a0and home to Grace Bay Beach, is where most crime in the territory occurs.<\/p>\n
The majority of international visitors arrive through Providenciales International Airport (PLS), and State Department officials said that police on the island \u201cmay have limited resources to investigate crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere have been reports of sexual assaults in the Turks and Caicos Islands,\u201d the advisory states.<\/p>\n
\u201cPetty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The State Department also warned Americans about specific scams that involve overcharging tourists in heavily traveled areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou may encounter aggressive vendors,\u201d the advisory noted. \u201cSome will offer \u2018free\u2019 gifts that lead to money demands. Most sites have tourist police available to help in uncomfortable situations.\u201d<\/p>\n
The advisory also said that firearms and ammunition are banned on the Turks and Caicos Islands, and those laws are strictly enforced by police.<\/p>\n

\u201cA firearm license or permit obtained in the United States or any other country is not valid in the Turks and Caicos Islands.\u201d<\/p>\n
The warning added, \u201cTravelers may face arrest, jail time and heavy fines. \u2026 We cannot get US citizens out of detention.\u201d<\/p>\n

The State Department recommends that travelers avoid opening\u00a0their hotel or residence door\u00a0to strangers, use caution when walking or driving at night and avoid physically resisting if confronted during a robbery.<\/p>\n

The warning comes amid a series of recent\u00a0travel and security advisories\u00a0from US officials.<\/p>\n
