NASA did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/nasa-spacecraft-ulma-thule-043053\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Horizons<\/a> spacecraft has stirred from a nearly yearlong slumber almost 10 billion kilometers from Earth, at the edge of the Solar System, where sunlight is faint and commands take hours to arrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The probe, famous for giving humanity its first close look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/observations\/pluto-new-horizons-repubz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pluto <\/a>in 2015, woke on June 23 after 321 days in hibernation. As it sends back nearly a year of stored measurements, scientists will use the probe to study a frontier only the Voyager spacecrafts have crossed before: the region where the solar wind slows and begins to mix with particles from interstellar space.<\/p>\n<p>Nine-Hour Snooze<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/CPyKP8DFUbikLVvagCEid7-1200-80.jpg.webp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" alt=\"Total solar eclipse with the moon covering the sun, creating a dark sky.\" class=\"wp-image-307679 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/CPyKP8DFUbikLVvagCEid7-1200-80.jpg-1024x576.webp\"  data-\/><\/a>New Horizons caught this image of Pluto\u2019s receding crescent as it was drifting away from the planet\u2014200,000 kilometers away from Pluto.\u00a0Credit: NASA<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Horizons entered hibernation on August 7, 2025, after NASA sent commands one month prior telling the spacecraft to power down most systems and wake in June 2026. During hibernation, the probe conserved resources while continuing to collect data, so it wasn\u2019t exactly inert during all this time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spacecraft is now about 64 astronomical units from Earth, or 10 billion kilometers (6 billion miles). One astronomical unit equals the average distance between Earth and the Sun. From New Horizons, a radio signal takes roughly nine hours to reach mission control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, engineers see no signs of trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery status report through this hibernation period was \u2018green,\u2019 meaning all was well aboard New Horizons each and every week,\u201d said Alice Bowman, the mission operations manager at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, in a NASA statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now awake, the spacecraft will begin sending back the data it gathered over the last 321 days and reporting on its condition in the cold dark far beyond Pluto.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d7<\/p>\n<p>                        Thank you! One more thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Please check your inbox and confirm your subscription.<\/p>\n<p>The Scale Is Wild<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/XhUjsBJo9JVHKJWZJ2C98C-1200-80.jpg.webp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" alt=\"Mars and Phobos, two celestial bodies, against a black background.\" class=\"wp-image-307680 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/XhUjsBJo9JVHKJWZJ2C98C-1200-80.jpg-1024x640.webp\"  data-\/><\/a>Composite image of Arrokoth obtained from data collected by New Horizons as it flew by the object on January 1st, 2019.\u00a0Credit: NASA<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Horizons launched as a Pluto mission, and in 2015 it transformed the former ninth planet from a blurry dot into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/observations\/pluto-new-horizons-repubz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geologically complex world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four years later, it flew past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/arrokoth-planetary-building-blocks-04253\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arrokoth<\/a>, a snowman-shaped asteroid in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/arrokoth-kuiper-belt-4023\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kuiper Belt<\/a>, the broad ring of icy bodies beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/neptune-has-a-weird-tilt-and-its-moon-might-be-to-blame-for-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neptune<\/a>. Since then, it has traveled another 23 astronomical units\u20143.44 billion kilometers, farther than the distance between the Sun and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/how-to-pronounce-uranus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uranus <\/a>(wild!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA has not found another Kuiper Belt object that New Horizons can currently reach. So the mission has shifted toward studying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/scientists-publish-the-first-3d-map-of-the-heliosphere-the-final-boundary-between-our-system-and-interstellar-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heliosphere<\/a>, the region around the Sun carved out by the solar wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the coming weeks, New Horizons will study hydrogen in the outer heliosphere. Scientists hope those measurements will help them understand the termination shock, the region where the solar wind slows as it meets material from interstellar space. Beyond this region, the spacecraft will start traveling effectively outside the solar system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have gone farther and crossed into interstellar space. As of writing this article, on July 10, 2026, Voyager 1 was about 173 astronomical units from Earth (26 billion kilometers), while Voyager 2 was about 143 astronomical units away (21.4 billion kilometers)\u2014absolutely wild. But New Horizons carries instruments that can make more sensitive measurements of some features in this distant region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe data from the termination shock encounter will be a treasure trove for space physicists worldwide who are eager to understand how this vast boundary works,\u201d Pontus Brandt, New Horizons project scientist at APL, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/new-horizons\/leaving-pluto-in-the-dust-new-horizons-probe-gearing-up-for-epic-crossing-of-termination-shock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space <\/a>in 2025. \u201cAll these discoveries from pioneering missions like Voyager and New Horizons teach us how little we know about what lies beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no new target appears, New Horizons is expected to leave the Kuiper Belt around 2028 or 2029 and continue outward, joining the Voyagers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Artist\u2019s rendering of the New Horizons spacecraft approaching Pluto and its three moons.
