{"id":92805,"date":"2025-07-26T01:12:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T01:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/92805\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T01:12:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T01:12:10","slug":"the-rash-you-should-be-on-the-lookout-for-as-cases-rise-in-virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/92805\/","title":{"rendered":"The rash you should be on the lookout for as cases rise in Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been an increase in the number of children in Fairfax County, Virginia, that are being diagnosed with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.<\/p>\n<p>There has been an increase in the number of children in Fairfax County, Virginia, that are being diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease.<\/p>\n<p>There have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/health\/fairfax-health-district-sees-rise-in-reports-hand-foot-mouth-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a total of six cases in Fairfax County<\/a>, five of those in the last two months, and health officials say it\u2019s very contagious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a lot of it right now,\u201d said Tiffany Kimbrough, a pediatrician at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. \u201cIt\u2019s a common virus that we often see spread in the summer months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said it\u2019s often seen in day care centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s spread through respiratory droplets, through drooling and contact with stools,\u201d Kimbrough said.<\/p>\n<p>While a rash on the hands and feet are a classic symptom, she said you can see it in other areas, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blisters can be also in the diaper region, on the back of the throat. It can be really painful when you\u2019re trying to eat and drink,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She recommended keeping you and your child as clean as possible with good hygiene routines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally good hand washing is important, especially after contact with any of the drool, after diaper changes or contact with any of the blisters, especially after they\u2019ve popped,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While the disease isn\u2019t deadly, Kimbrough said you have to make sure your child isn\u2019t getting dehydrated since sores often also show up on the back of the throat.<\/p>\n<p>You should check that your child is \u201cmaking at least one wet diaper every eight hours is really the biggest thing, so that we can make sure they\u2019re staying on top of their fluids,\u201d she said. \u201cAvoid things that are acidic or that might burn the back of the throat, and go for our bland, more boring things, just to make sure that we\u2019re staying on top of fluids is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no medication that treats HFMD, but over-the-counter aspirins can help relieve the pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">Get breaking news and daily headlines delivered to your email inbox by signing up <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/newsletter-signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">\u00a9 2025 WTOP.
