For Jacksonville-based tech company SkillStorm, it\u2019s more than a one-day observance\u2014it\u2019s part of their mission every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SkillStorm specializes in training and placing U.S.-based talent\u2014including veterans\u2014into high-demand fields like cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. COO Joe Mitchell says veterans thrive at the company because the skills they bring from the military directly translate to tech and corporate environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey come with leadership skills, discipline, and a mission-focused mindset,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cThose are all key attributes in the marketplace, whether it\u2019s engineering, HR, or legal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of those success stories is Kal Vaughn, a former Special Operations combat veteran who now serves as SkillStorm\u2019s Corporate Paralegal and Director of Security and Contracts Management. Vaughn brings experience from sensitive national security missions and has earned certifications in everything from Arabic language and warfare to AWS DevOps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSkillStorm saw something in me and invested in that,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cThey gave me the runway to do what I was good at, and then gave me the tools and training I needed to keep growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That investment in growth is a cornerstone of the company\u2019s culture. Mitchell says many veterans don\u2019t just fill a role\u2014they flourish into leadership positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou may start out as a technologist, but you may end up head of sales, HR, or legal,\u201d he said. \u201cKal is actually pursuing a law degree right now with plans to stay and grow here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to Veteran.com, nearly 200,000 service members transition out of the military each year, and National Hire a Veteran Day is a reminder that their skill sets\u2014from critical thinking to adaptability\u2014are exactly what many industries need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the past two years alone, SkillStorm has trained and hired hundreds of veterans, earning both platinum and gold medallion honors from the Department of Labor for its hiring efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t set out to win awards,\u201d Mitchell added. \u201cWe did it because veterans bring the qualities employers are looking for, and we have the network to connect with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Vaughn, it\u2019s not just about a job\u2014it\u2019s about finding purpose and support after military service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI felt the same values at SkillStorm that I did with my military team,\u201d he said. \u201cThat kind of support, loyalty, and trust\u2014it\u2019s rare.
