NBC Sports brought Larry David on for an interview at the American Century Championship on the shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada, and the Seinfeld co-creator and Curb Your Enthusiasm star stayed very true to himself.<\/p>\n
David, who also stars in the new HBO series Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, sat down with NBC Sports’ Smylie Kaufman and Kira K. Dixon in what turned into an all-over-the-place, six-minute conversation at the celebrity golf tournament.<\/p>\n
“Hey, will you idiots shut up?” David said to a bunch of guys who were yelling from a boat in the background as the interview began.<\/p>\n
Dixon said that NBC Sports president Jon Miller has been trying to get David to come to the tournament “for years.”<\/p>\n
“You know, I couldn’t take it anymore,” David said. “The guy was relentless. He wouldn’t leave me alone. I had to change my cell phone. And finally, I just said, ‘Okay, what the hell? I’ll come. And I so regret it. First, I’m getting skin cancer sitting here. You can’t get some shade in this spot?\u2026 Give me an awning or something.”<\/p>\n
“By the way, I haven’t played a round before 10 o’clock in the morning maybe in 15 years,” David explained. “Okay? 15 years. And they’ve got me teeing off at 7:45. Forget it. So, you know, I set the alarm. I get up early, and, you know, I’m quite old. So, it takes a while for the body to get going. Anyway, I needed to warm up at the range. Couldn’t find my clubs. I was in a terrible mood. Terrible.”<\/p>\n
Dixon asked David, “What’s your thoughts on golf etiquette these days, Larry?”<\/p>\n
“First of all, the one thing I hate about golf are people taking their hats off on the 18th hole,” David said. “I don’t like people taking their hats off on the 18th hole when copying the professionals, because that’s what the professionals do. So, they feel the need to take their hat off. And I find it ridiculous.”<\/p>\n
Kaufman asked David about his golf swing, but David was distracted by his own phone alarm going off.<\/p>\n
“By the way, that’s my alarm on my phone going off,” David explained. “I’m supposed to take an eye drop. I set the alarm to take an eye drop. That’s why the phone’s going off. But, anyway, it’s not going to stop. Let me see. Oh, no. It stopped. Okay. What was the question?”<\/p>\n
David was then distracted again by his phone and looked at it before handing it away.<\/p>\n
On the topic of unsolicited advice at the driving range, David said, “You’ve got to be a jerk to do that\u2026 It’s a terrible thing.”<\/p>\n
“I’ve changed my swing recently, and my friends cannot stand it,” David added. “I don’t want to talk about it yet\u2026 I’m not at liberty to disclose my new swing.”<\/p>\n
“You guys need some shade. I’m worried about you. You’re very fair-skinned,” David said to Kaufman. “And how did you get this name, by the way?”<\/p>\n
“It’s a family name, but I try to keep a smile on my face,” Kaufman said. “But sometimes when I play golf, frowns come out.”<\/p>\n
“It’s kind of a, if you don’t mind me saying, it’s kind of a lame name,” David said, in dialogue that sounds straight out of Curb. “Smylie? Smylie?”<\/p>\n
“I don’t think you’re going to forget it,” Kaufman responded. “I don’t think you’re going to forget it. I might forget Larry.”<\/p>\n
“I hope you do,” David said.<\/p>\n
David added “this was a pleasure” before exiting the interview, and he offered some more thoughts to the guys partying on the boat before leaving the set.<\/p>\n
