(Photo by Alexa Vazquez\/Times of San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers and local leaders gathered Friday for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, 15 years in the making, celebrating the launch of River Studios.<\/p>\n<p>The new nature learning center, in the heart of Mission Valley, is located within the developing <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegoriver.org\/discover\/grant-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grant Park<\/a> and spearheaded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegoriver.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The facility, with digital microscopes, aquariums and remote sensing tools, is aimed at sparking student interest in nature conservation. It also will house the foundation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegoriver.org\/discover\/grant-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cool River Education Program<\/a>, which is expected to reach 10,000 students annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis park, this studio, this area has been front and center in the vision for San Diego and our nation,\u201d foundation board Chair Michael Schneider said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to bring the community together, celebrate our environment and get folks focused on what San Diego is all about, beyond our beaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once an abandoned sand mine, the 17-acre site was donated to the foundation<strong> <\/strong>by <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegohistory.org\/archives\/biographysubject\/usgrantjr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego\u2019s Grant family<\/a>, launching the long effort to create an outdoor-focused STEM education facility.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation recently reached its $13 million fundraising goal thanks to community efforts and private donations. This includes $500,000 in federal funding secured with the help of Democratic Rep. Sara Jacobs \u2014 a third-generation San Diegan.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs, who flew in from Washington D.C. to speak at the ceremony, said she believes the center will help ensure equal access to STEM education for students who lack easy access to San Diego\u2019s \u201cnatural beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aiming to serve the more than 70,000 students within 15 minutes of Grant Park, center officials said it will focus on nearby Title 1 schools to close opportunity gaps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1000001485-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1000001485.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-333740\" style=\"width:400px;height:auto\"  \/><\/a>Councilmember Stephen Whitburn contributed to local and nation-wide efforts to construct the River Studios at the newly built Grant Park (Photo by Alexa Vazquez)<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the foundation promised that over 80% of students will come from underserved communities, with all core programming offered at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis studio will be an important bridge connecting students from underrepresented backgrounds to nature, providing hands-on STEM education and helping to create lifelong stewards of our environment,\u201d Jacobs said.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also saw appearances by San Diego councilmembers Raul Campillo amd Stephen Whitburn, who both helped streamline the permitting process and \u201ccut through the red tape,\u201d according to Schneider.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks to donors and volunteers, Campillo emphasized the center\u2019s mission to reconnect children with nature \u2014 especially the San Diego River, which runs through the park and near the studio.<\/p>\n<p>While calling Mission Valley a \u201cspecial place,\u201d he noted that the community may fall short if it focuses solely on jobs and housing without also inspiring young people to engage with the world around them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1000001497-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1000001497.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-333880\" style=\"width:397px;height:auto\"  \/><\/a>River Studio plans to add an arts component through a partnership with the San Diego River Artists Alliance, featuring work by local artists.
