Washington <\/p>\n<p>Shalonda Gilmore lost her son, Kealon, after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2022\/04\/03\/1-killed-10-wounded-in-shooting-at-southeast-oak-cliff-concert-police-say\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatally shot at a 2022 concert<\/a> in southeast Oak Cliff. When a jury awarded Gilmore\u2019s family and other shooting survivors nearly $76 million in damages Friday, Gilmore said she finally found \u201csome type of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the only thing that keeping us going because we have some accountability,\u201d she said. \u201cSomebody is accountable for what happened to him at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys confirmed that defendants, including event promoter Germaud \u201cBossman Bubba\u201d\u00a0Lyons and St. John Missionary Baptist Church, are now responsible to pay Gilmore\u2019s family and six other survivors\u00a0nearly $76 million in damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>But attorney Daryl K. Washington, who represented the Gilmore family, wrote in a statement that it was never about the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about change and ensuring that future events have proper protocols in place to make sure attendees are protected.\u201d he wrote. \u201cThis verdict will send a message to those who are planning events and thinking about not adequately protecting the individuals to earn additional profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiffs alleged that organizers did not properly prepare for the event, putting them and their loved ones in harms way. Gilmore was killed, and sixteen others were injured at the event, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/crime\/2022\/04\/04\/dallas-officers-were-working-security-at-outdoor-concert-where-17-were-shot-police-chief-says\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two men fired into the crowd<\/a>. The two men were later arrested and charged with felony deadly conduct.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators later said that the event, which was attended by about 2,000 people, did not have the proper city permits or emergency plan. Kealon\u2019s father, Kelvin Gilmore, said organizers advertised safety features \u2014 like metal detectors and clear-bag policies \u2014 which the event did not have in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><strong>Related:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/crime\/2022\/04\/05\/what-we-know-about-the-shooting-that-killed-1-wounded-16-others-at-a-dallas-outdoor-concert\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What we know about the shooting that killed 1, wounded 16 others at a Dallas outdoor concert<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey broke not just our trust and the other families that were devastated by this \u2014 but think about all the other thousands of people that were out there,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gilmore added he\u2019s grateful the decision will help hold Lyons and St. John\u2019s accountable for their actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t resolve the issue, but it surely lets us know that there is true justice out there,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lyons could not be reached for comment on the verdict.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Jeff Hall, who represents St. John\u2019s, said the church did not authorize the event, nor did leadership \u201cauthorize anyone to come on to the land for the event.\u201d While the concert did not take place in the church, organizers used land the church owned over 9 miles from the sanctuary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat what happened out there was a terrible tragedy, and St. John sympathizes deeply with the survivors and the families who have suffered injuries and loss of life,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kealon&#8217;s parents described their son as a smart, humble young man who was devoted to his family.
