{"id":931168,"date":"2026-07-13T03:36:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T03:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/931168\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T03:36:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T03:36:21","slug":"man-struck-by-lightning-while-doing-yardwork-in-jacksonville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/931168\/","title":{"rendered":"Man struck by lightning while doing yardwork in Jacksonville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Lisa Dunn says it was a sunny afternoon with clear skies when her nephew, Joshua Lehmbeck, was struck by lightning while doing yardwork in the backyard of a client\u2019s home in Fort Caroline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">She says she was just down the street when it happened a week ago on July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cWe heard a big sonic boom, and everybody around us, including us, thought it was like a transformer or lightning,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cAnd we look on the radar; nothing around. We go outside and look, nothing around, and then it turns out that it was him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">She says that after the boom, the homeowner went outside and found him on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cBoots flown off, shirt flown off, his pants were still on, but he had lightning strikes going through them,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cIt went into his hat, down his ear. That\u2019s why he was having hearing loss. He was wearing two chains wrapped around his neck, all the way down his body. You can see the stripe through his groin area, through his right leg, and out through his toe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Dunn says Lehmbeck spent three days in the burn unit \u2014 something she says hospital staff were surprised by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ve never seen someone leave that quickly from the burn unit,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cEven the doctors were very surprised he wasn\u2019t having cardiac issues or any organ issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Dunn says staff hypothesize that his sweat may have helped him through something called the \u201cFlashover effect.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/coreem.net\/core\/lightning-injuries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Core Em<\/a> describes this as when \u201clightning travels across the body\u2019s surface,\u201d allowing the current to travel along the outside of the body, increasing survival and decreasing the likelihood of internal injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Our First Alert Weather Team says that lightning deaths that happened while doing yardwork accounted for 3% of all lightning deaths in the U.S. between 2006 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Dunn says she\u2019s just happy Lehmbeck will not be adding to that statistic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThey were really amazed how lucky he was and how good he was doing,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cHe had a guardian angel over him, like he was truly blessed during that another family was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/st-augustine-beach-lightning-survivor-describes-moment-strike-hit-her-family\/77LKXYLKCBA3FGJCGL2NK5AJQU\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck by lightning at the St. Augustine Pier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Jayme Schuler says she was walking down the pier with both of her parents on July 12, 2025, when her and her dad, Phillip, were both knocked to the ground by a lightning strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">They told Action News Jax last year that by the time they noticed lightning in the distance, it was already too late.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cAll of a sudden, I felt a ton of bricks hit me in the head,\u201d Schuler said. \u201cSo I got struck, but then it kind of knocked me sideways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Another person was struck by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wftv.com\/news\/local\/volusia-county\/volusia-lifeguard-shares-his-story-after-being-indirectly-struck-by-lightning\/4MGRXM6ITBGS5KQDAWKX4HXTHA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lightning just over a week ago in Volusia County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[SIGN UP: <\/b><a Fourth of July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lieutenant Maxwell Ervanian with Jax Beach Ocean Rescue says When the thunder roars, go indoors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cOur lifeguards do a pretty significant job in prevention and warning when we do have dangerous weather incoming into the Jacksonville Beach area,\u201d Ervanian said. \u201cIt\u2019s really important that we stress to all bathers and beachgoers: when you hear thunder to leave the beach and seek shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p
